Is the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Musical Finally Happening? Director Speaks Out!

The idea for a musical adaptation of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” a popular movie from the 2000s based on Ann Brashares’ novel, was revealed around ten years ago. The original director has recently expressed thoughts on this much-anticipated venture. This heartwarming tale revolves around a group of friends navigating their separate paths in adulthood while remaining connected through a mystifying pair of pants that miraculously fit them all, despite their differing sizes. A classic coming-of-age story from the 2000s, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” was succeeded by another film a few years later.

Development on a third movie started in 2018, and it was announced that year that a “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” musical was in the works. Recently, the original film director Ken Kwapis shared some insights about this musical during an interview with ScreenRant. When asked if the project was still active, Kwapis admitted he was unaware of its current status. He mentioned, “I believe someone was attempting to create a Sisterhood musical,” but added, “I don’t have enough details to provide any further information.

As a film enthusiast, I was asked if I would be suitable for the task of directing the musical adaptation of “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”. Intriguingly, my response was a blend of enthusiasm and uncertainty. I expressed, “I would adore the opportunity…yet, I’m not sure if I’m the right fit to handle a grand spectacle. However, I have a deep affection for musicals.

User: Even though you have a lot going on right now, I remember an AMA session you had years ago where you mentioned your desire to direct a musical. I’m wondering if that ambition is still active. Back in 2018, news broke about a Sisterhood musical being in the works. However, it hasn’t come to fruition yet. Is there any update on this project?

Ken Kwapis: It appears someone has been attempting to create a Sisterhood musical, but I can’t tell you who. All I have is this piece of information, suggesting that there was an effort in that direction. To be honest, they would be perfect for a musical!

I’d love to learn more about it, as when I first heard of it, I thought, “What a fantastic concept!” However, due to the lengthy process involved in creating musicals, it could very well be that the project is still under development. Regrettably, I’m unaware of its current status.

ScreenRant: Would you still want to direct a musical? They’re making Mama Mia 3, so…

Ken Kwapis: I’d be thrilled to take on a heartfelt, musical production! There’s nothing more delightful for me than directing a musical, especially one with well-developed characters. While I might not be the best fit for grand spectacles, I have a soft spot for musicals and their singing characters always bring me joy.

What Kwapis’ Comments Mean For The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants Musical

The Filmmaker Could Be Out Of The Loop Or The Project Could Be Stalled

According to what Kwapis shared in his conversation with ScreenRant, musical adaptations are intricately crafted and progress at a slower pace compared to regular films. The scarcity of updates for almost a decade seems to imply that the beloved coming-of-age story may not be returning as a musical anytime soon. Since Kwapis isn’t deeply involved in the production process, if he doesn’t have any information, it suggests there might not be any significant developments on the project at this time.

Our Take On The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants Musical

The Moment Has Likely Passed For The Musical

It’s been 17 years since “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2”, and it seems that the moment for a third installment or a musical rendition might have already passed. While nostalgia can be quite powerful, it’s debatable whether a comedy from the 2000s is the ideal choice to revisit in the current decade. Additionally, musical adaptations of films have had mixed results, and recent attempts like “Mean Girls” didn’t fully capture the essence of their original material. Given that “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” is a beloved film from the 2000s, a misguided musical could potentially damage its legacy.
