Is The Project cursed? All the disasters that have befallen Ten's panel show over the years - after mid-air fire alarm caused mass evacuation

As a long-time viewer and admirer of The Project, I must admit I’ve been following its journey with a mix of amusement and concern lately. Having grown up in Australia, I’ve always appreciated the show’s unique blend of news, entertainment, and wit that resonates with our vibrant cultural landscape. However, recent events have left me scratching my head more than once.

On Wednesday evening, an unexpected fire alarm disrupted the usual broadcast of The Project on Channel 10.

But the dramatic incident is not the first disaster to befall the network’s news panel show.

Various recent scandals, blunders, and uncomfortable incidents have led some viewers to speculate that the long-standing show is jinxed.

At exactly 6:49 PM on a Wednesday, viewers at home found themselves puzzled as the news program led by Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, and Sam Taunton mysteriously disappeared from their screens during an advertisement break.

It was replaced with an episode of The Dog House Australia.

Considering unexpected events, I’m sorry for any inconvenience, but here’s a special viewing of The Dog House for your entertainment instead.

It wasn’t long before The Project’s feed on X, formerly known as Twitter, lit up.

‘Is there a blackout in the Studio?’ asked one bamboozled viewer.

The first person seemed to be asking for clarification, saying something like: “Are there unexpected events happening? I think a little extra information would be helpful. Was it your camera that got damaged? Or were you dealing with a health issue?” Then another participant inquired: “Did the power go out where you are?”

‘WTF just happened? Your show just vanished. Now I am looking at a dog adoption show,’ commented another.

A post shared to X by the program revealed a fire alarm was set off in the studio, bringing the show to a grinding halt and forcing its presenters and crew to evacuate The Como Centre in South Yarra where the show is filmed.

A more recent unfortunate incident involved a guest on a talk show breaking into a profanity-filled tirade about pandas during the interview.

In June, Vicky Xu, a Chinese-Australian journalist and author, made an appearance on the show to talk about Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s current trip to Australia, as well as his recent declaration regarding a panda exchange at Adelaide Zoo.

Ms Xu was asked by panelist Sam Taunton if she was excited about Adelaide Zoo getting new pandas.

Ms. Xu acknowledged, ‘Initially, I believed pandas were too sluggish for reproduction, but now I realize that I was mistaken. In fact, it appears they are not.’ She further clarified, ‘I previously stated that their lethargy might be causing them to become endangered, but I was wrong about that as well.’

She exclaimed, “Look at me in this outfit! I’m far more adorable than those oversized, non-offensive pandas.”

Ms Xu’s comment was met with shock and laughter by The Project hosts.

Later on, the Project faced criticism online as people on social media labeled the segment as awkward and even sarcastically referred to the program as a “normal” one, implying it was anything but ordinary.

Last February, the broadcast faced some heated discussions as a comedian, Reuben Kaye, made explicit jokes about Jesus Christ during a live show.

“Kaye made a jest by saying, ‘I admire Jesus deeply. I admire any man who could endure being nailed up for three entire days only to return again,!'”

Waleed Aly was left speechless by a joke made by a comedian, while Sarah Harris and the rest of the cast joined in the laughter. The comedian who told the joke was known for his humorous take on gay topics.

Yet, the contentious joke ignited intense backlash on the internet as numerous individuals deemed it inappropriate or overstepped boundaries.

The panel show has also undergone an audience decline ever since changing up its format.

The ongoing issues with ratings for The Project seem to align with increasing scrutiny over its perceived left-leaning slant, as well as the departures of notable personalities such as Carrie Bickmore, Peter Helliar, and Lisa Wilkinson.

Last year, the program made a comeback featuring a fresh lineup that includes Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton, Michael Hing, and veteran host Waleed Aly.

However, it appears that Harris is finding the demanding weekly trip from Sydney to Melbourne challenging, as the new format of the talk show has yet to ignite enthusiasm.

According to sources close to Channel 10, Harris, a busy single mom with two kids, is finding the novelty of commuting to Melbourne for tapings of The Project (recorded from Sunday to Thursday) to be losing its charm a bit. (Paraphrased)

Previously, the host who was on Studio 10 moved to The Project following the unexpected departures of Bickmore, Helliar, and Wilkinson towards the end of 2022. It’s also worth noting that the financial aspect might be a concern for the panel show, as Network Ten recently initiated cost-reduction measures, leading to cancellations of shows like The Masked Singer and The Bachelors.

The outlook for the struggling TV network, belonging to Paramount Global, remains unclear due to ongoing losses of television programs, coupled with falling viewership ratings and a financial crisis in advertising revenues, according to news.com.au reports.

In May, it was made public that two popular reality TV series on Channel Ten, The Masked Singer and The Bachelor, were canceled due to potential merger discussions involving the network.

There’s been talk that The Project could be next to face cancellation, but the network keeps insisting that it won’t be taken off the air in the near future.
