Is Tawny Newsome's live-action Star Trek comedy still happening?

As a seasoned Star Trek fan with over three decades of devotion to this universe under my belt, I find myself eagerly anticipating the next comedic installment from the franchise. Tawny Newsome, the talented star behind Lower Decks, is set to write a new series focusing on the unsung heroes of a tourist planet – the crew managing its establishments. This idea has piqued my interest, and if executed well, it could be a promising addition to the Star Trek family.

As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of anticipation as Star Trek: Lower Decks gears up for its final chapter. When this hilarious journey comes to an end, fellow Trekkies will undoubtedly be on the hunt for another dose of franchise comedy that tickles our funny bones, for good or for bad. Luckily, it seems that the creative minds behind Star Trek have already planned the next big thing, with Lower Decks’ very own Tawny Newsome stepping into the role of lead writer.

Newsome is writing a new show that seems to be set on a tourist planet of sorts, think Risa, and will focus on the crew who manage the establishments on said planet. It seems like a fine idea and one that could have some serious legs to it if it’s done well.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for updates about the new comedy from my favorite franchise. We’ve seen significant progress with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but the comedy series seems to have gone quiet. Even though the production for Lower Decks is nearly complete and all obligations to the franchise have been fulfilled, there’s been no sign of momentum on the series. I can’t help but wonder if the creative team is still burning with enthusiasm for this project, as it’s a concept that really excites me!

If fans view it as a spiritual successor to Lower Decks, it’s an opportune moment for announcements. However, no news has been forthcoming. So, during our conversation with Newsome, we inquired about any progress on the new show, and he shared that the work continues unabated.

Newsome affirmed, “What I can tell you is that we’re consistently working on it and submitting our work, and they keep asking us to write more. As long as they let us carry on and don’t instruct us to halt our efforts, we will keep developing it.

There’s room for discussion about whether Star Trek should incorporate more humor, but we’re excited to see Newsome shine in a series of her own. She’s a versatile actress, and her roles in Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds demonstrate just how captivating and versatile she can be on screen.

It would be quite intriguing if she were asked to direct a show, an experience that might not turn out terribly, provided the show avoids the chaotic antics reminiscent of Lower Decks. The reception towards Lower Decks was lukewarm due to its portrayal of Starfleet, which many fans consider as one of Gene Roddenberry’s most successful elements. For some fans, the transformation of Starfleet into slapstick silliness didn’t align with their expectations.

Presenting an exhibition beyond Starfleet could potentially resonate more with fans, as it would avoid giving the impression that the show is trivializing something deeply valued by everyone.
