Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds too "Star Trek-y" for casuals?

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a triumphant return to the franchise’s golden age. As a child, I was captivated by Captain Kirk’s adventures and the ideals of peace and exploration that Star Trek embodied.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds represents a cherished addition to the Star Trek universe. This series allows Captain Christopher Pike to complete the tales that original creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned for him, based on the initial, unsuccessful pilot episode of the franchise. Now, viewers are wholeheartedly supporting the protagonist and his dedicated Starfleet comrades as they embark on their exciting adventures together.

The show harks back to classic Star Trek and, although it occasionally veers into silliness, it’s generally been praised as one of the finest entries in the franchise’s history by a wide range of people – from critics to devoted fans, whether they’re long-time enthusiasts or newcomers.

On our Star Trek-themed site, we’re thrilled that the franchise has produced a series tailored for fans like us. However, in our passionate engagement with the show, there seems to be a notion brewing which we might not always be vigilant about. Dustin Rowels from Pajiba.com recently discussed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as he reviewed the most recent shows that have been renewed and cancelled.

Regarding the upcoming revival of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Rowles expressed reservations about Strange New Worlds, stating that it’s overly reminiscent of traditional Star Trek for his liking. This might initially appear as criticism, but it’s actually just a personal preference. It’s understandable that not everyone is a fan of Star Trek, and that’s perfectly fine.

Quite surprisingly, the response is negative. If Star Trek isn’t your cup of tea, that’s perfectly fine. However, it’s important to understand that the brand won’t alter itself to suit your preferences. After all, nobody asks pizza parlors to make pizzas as steaks with butter and chives instead of cheese and pepperoni – that’s a steak! You can simply go get a steak if you prefer it.

Essentially, Star Trek is unique in its own way due to the vision of Gene Roddenberry and subsequent series like The Next Generation, Voyager, and Deep Space Nine. Changing it to something else would essentially be changing its identity. Just as a steak isn’t pizza, Star Trek can’t transform into something it wasn’t intended to be, merely to cater to personal preferences. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, perhaps it’s not the right fit for you.

Star Trek doesn’t need to soften its approach to appeal to casual viewers. It’s unique, and that’s part of its charm. Some people may not like it, and that’s alright. The show is designed for a particular audience, and it should stay true to its roots. Instead of trying to conform to the ideas proposed by figures like JJ Abrams, who made Star Trek more accessible in 2009, the series should continue presenting itself as it has always been – authentic and true to its original spirit.
