Is Star Tours Doomed? The Shocking Changes to Smuggler’s Run Have Me Worried!

At the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Japan, there was a wealth of information shared about future Star Wars films and television shows. As an enthusiast of theme parks here at TopMob, I found myself particularly intrigued by the updates regarding Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. These changes will significantly alter the attraction, with a narrative now centered around The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The occasion lived up to expectations, providing us with numerous fresh insights regarding the probable improvement of the new attraction at both Disney World and Disneyland compared to the original version. However, it sparked some apprehension within me concerning another Star Wars-themed attraction.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run Changes Will Make The Attraction Worth Riding More Often

At the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, only one new attraction was introduced – Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. In this storyline, the charming character Hondo Onaka takes the Falcon from Chewbacca for a spot of smuggling. As visitors, we assume the roles of the ship’s crew, with groups of six people taking turns to perform duties at three key positions: pilot, gunner, and engineer.

This added a touch of repeatability to the experience, yet upon trying out all the stations, one would have completed the attraction. Although enjoying the ride with friends was entertaining, sharing it with strangers didn’t often justify the effort.

The revamped attraction offers visitors three distinct destinations – Bespin, Endor, and Coruscant – to explore, providing a more diverse ride experience. To fully immerse themselves in each location’s offerings, guests would need to take the ride at least three times, once for each destination.

In the upcoming game “Smuggler’s Run”, the often overlooked role of an engineer is set to become more engaging as they will now interact with and look after Grogu (a character from The Mandalorian). Previously, choosing the Single Rider line in Smuggler’s Run would usually secure you the engineer position, but this might not always be the case moving forward.

I’m More Worried Than Ever About The Future Of Star Tours

If the thought of a “Star Wars” attraction that can voyage to various spots across the “Star Wars” universe seems familiar, it’s because it’s already been created. Since its renovation, Star Tours has offered an unpredictable journey through the galaxy, far, far away. With numerous potential Star Tours experiences available, few rides are alike.

Since the unveiling of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, there has been speculation that Star Tours might be getting closed down. Located in Tomorrowland at Disneyland and separated by the Muppets and soon Monsters Inc. at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it raised questions about why the parks would not have a Star Wars attraction within the Star Wars-themed land.

Concerns about the ride leaving proved unnecessary. In fact, Star Tours underwent a significant overhaul only last year, incorporating characters from different Star Wars series on Disney+ into the experience.

Despite the fact that the Millennium Falcon ride is expected to have some similarities to Star Tours, this could make Star Tours seem less necessary. Given that Disneyland’s Tomorrowland needs renovation and the Muppet Courtyard is set for a significant transformation, it wouldn’t be surprising if Star Tours were incorporated into one of these projects, potentially suggesting its future changes or even closure.

I’d really miss Star Tours if it were to close down. There are plenty of reasons why it should stay, such as its ongoing popularity and the unique experiences it provides compared to Smuggler’s Run. However, I have concerns about its future, given that the new version of Smuggler’s Run won’t debut until the release of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie in May 2026. A lot could change between now and then.
