Is Set It Off 2 Really Happening? Here’s What We Know

Since its release in 1996, there has been ongoing speculation about the possibility of a sequel titled Set It Off 2. The original film played a significant role in launching the careers of stars like Vivica A. Fox, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Kimberly Elise, as well as propelling F. Gary Gray into prominence as a talented director. The plot revolves around a group of friends who resort to bank robbery due to their dire circumstances. Despite its somber undertones, the movie is also a groundbreaking work for Black women, who were seldom portrayed as action heroes during that period.

2019 saw Entertainment Weekly describe the original “Set It Off” as a groundbreaking movie in a retrospective piece, expressing strong reservations about remaking it. Yet, around the same time, whispers of a potential remake or sequel emerged, but whether “Set It Off 2” will ever come to fruition remains uncertain.

Set It Off 2 Is Not Confirmed

For years, there have been whispers about the making of Set It Off 2, fueled in part by the fervent hopes of fans who adore the ’90s film. However, in 2019, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a fresh take on the original was underway. Issa Rae and her producing partner Montrel McKay were announced as the producers, working with writers Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster to craft the script.

In 2025, Singleton discussed the prospective script for a film during interviews while publicizing her movie “One of Them Days”. However, in contrast to these discussions, Issa Rae refuted rumors about her participation back in 2019. She stated explicitly to Entertainment Tonight that she would not remake a classic film. Since then, no studio has verified the remake.

Set It Off 2 Cast

At this moment, it’s just Issa Rae who is speculated to feature in the upcoming movie. Contrary to her statement on Entertainment Tonight that she wouldn’t revisit a classic, she remains the sole actor linked to the as-yet unverified production.

It’s highly unlikely that the original actors from Set It Off will feature in a sequel or reboot of the series, as they have expressed a desire to let the movie be without any changes. Queen Latifah, who played a character that died in the original film, has humorously mentioned having a “no death clause” in her contracts due to this role. She quipped to James Corden, “I’m dying too well in these movies, and if I die, I can’t be in the sequel,” suggesting she might have been open to reprising her role if her character hadn’t met her end in the original story.

Back in 2014, when the idea of a “Set It Off” sequel was brought up, I, as a die-hard fan, wasn’t exactly jumping at the prospect. However, if given the chance, I would leap at the opportunity to collaborate with my costars once more, provided it’s not another sequel, but rather a fresh, new project. That was what I shared with BET during an interview.

A prequel could certainly be intriguing, as it would offer insights into how each character ended up at their starting point in the film. However, I believe the original movie stands tall on its own and doesn’t require any additional content. Instead, I’d prefer to reunite with those actresses for a new project, perhaps crafting another timeless piece together.

During an interview on The Sherri Shepherd Show in 2024, Vivica A. Fox flatly declined any possibility of a sequel or reboot, emphatically stating, “No, absolutely not! It’s a timeless classic!” Much like the rest of the original cast, Fox seems reluctant to bring back a new version of the film. She believes that some movies are best left untouched.

In 2020, Jada Pinkett Smith shared during an interview on “Where Is The Buzz” that the original cast wouldn’t participate in a sequel or reboot. She expressed, “It’s a timeless classic, it’s complete,” but suggested that a fresh take on the movie could be created with a new group of actors, possibly being the direction taken instead of a direct follow-up story.

Set It Off 2 Story Details

Since the sequel to “Set It Off,” titled “Set It Off 2,” has not been officially confirmed, there’s currently no information available regarding its plot. Initially, it was suggested that the movie might be a “reimagining,” hinting at a fresh take or reboot of the original storyline.

In a revised scenario, audiences might expect the original four characters from the story to reunite under dire conditions, seeking a fast income source once more, but this time in today’s world. Bank robbery in the 2020s contrasts significantly with the 1990s, largely due to technological advancements that make it much tougher to pull off such a crime undetected. A remake of Set It Off, therefore, would need to adapt to the progress made in security systems, tracking technology, and other related aspects.

Until the Set It Off sequel or reboot is confirmed, however, audiences will not have many answers.
