Sean Penn is famous for being independent and often ignores rules and expectations.
The Academy Award-winning actor, who began his career in the 1982 film Bad Boys, got in trouble with the Golden Globes after being seen smoking inside the awards ceremony on Sunday night.
Sean, age 65, could be fined for smoking a cigarette inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel, which prohibits indoor smoking. California law has banned indoor smoking since 1995.
The Los Angeles Fire Department says fines for a first-time offense range from $81 to $324, with an additional $100 penalty under state law.
Sean couldn’t resist having a cigarette during the Golden Globes, and photographers caught him smoking near Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Hudson.
People on X noticed a potential fine and are calling the veteran smoker ‘arrogant’ for seemingly breaking the rules at the glamorous event.
But it isn’t the first time the One Battle After Another star has broken the rules.

The actor noticeably smoked cigarettes continuously during a press event at the 2024 Marrakech International Film Festival.
Los Angeles now prohibits smoking and vaping in all areas where it’s already against the rules to smoke.
Sean, known for past relationships with celebrities like Madonna, Robin Wright, and Charlize Theron, is often in the news due to his outspoken personality and tendency to become easily angered.
In 1985, Sean got into trouble after physically assaulting two journalists who were photographing him with Madonna in Nashville. This marked the start of a troubling behavior that ultimately resulted in a prison sentence two years later.
Sean was already serving a probation sentence when he filmed Colors. This followed an arrest for simple assault after he attacked songwriter David Wolinski at a Los Angeles nightclub called Helena’s.
He was required to follow strict rules as part of his probation, but a chaotic situation occurred on the movie set, damaging his reputation even further.
In 1987 Sean had another brush with the law after punching an extra on the set of his film Colors.
Sean was arrested and given a 60-day jail sentence for assaulting Jeffrey Klein. He ended up serving 33 days of that sentence.

Elsewhere, Sean has denied many rumours over the years that he beat ex-wife Madonna.
Their marriage in the 1980s was marked by trouble, and there were shocking reports of abuse. It was claimed he once restrained her by tying her to a chair and, on another occasion, hit her with a baseball bat.
Both Madonna and Sean Penn have consistently denied that he ever abused her, and she even gave testimony in court to support him in a lawsuit about the claims.
Sean Penn and Madonna got married in 1985, but their relationship was famously turbulent. They divorced in 1987, briefly got back together, and ultimately separated for good in 1989.
Despite being at the centre of controversies through the years, he isn’t worried by cancel culture.
Sean recently discussed ‘cancel culture’ and a perceived lack of accountability with Julia Roberts, while talking about her film ‘After The Hunt’, which deals with the aftermath of the Me-Too movement.
Much of the conversation centered on Julia Roberts’ new film, After The Hunt. The movie tells the story of a college professor whose life is turned upside down when a student accuses a coworker of sexual assault, ultimately revealing a hidden trauma from the professor’s own past.
The movie explores the difficult choices people face when their loyalty to others clashes with what they believe is right and wrong.

Sean commented on how much he appreciated the film’s willingness to push boundaries and make viewers uncomfortable, arguing that challenging societal norms is important. He also expressed a surprising view, suggesting that shame isn’t necessarily a negative emotion and that people should feel it when they do something wrong.
Sean Penn, who has been married and divorced three times and grew up in Malibu, has twice won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He received the awards for his roles in the 2004 crime thriller Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood, and the 2009 biographical film Milk, directed by Gus Van Sant.
In November 2022, Sean Penn gifted one of his Oscars to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This happened eight months after the Academy denied Zelenskyy the opportunity to address the awards show, despite allowing Will Smith to assault Chris Rock on stage during the same event.
Sean admitted it wasn’t important, but having it with him would give him comfort and strength during difficult times, he explained.
If you succeed, please come back to Malibu – it would mean a lot to me to know a part of me is still here.
