Is Retro the New Modern in Automotive Design?
In an age dominated by screens, sensors, and electrification, one might find it peculiar that some of the most buzzed-about cars in 2025 appear as if they’ve stepped out from the past. However, retro design isn’t merely a wistful trick; it has transformed into a potent aesthetic means for automakers aiming to distinguish themselves and rekindle their roots. From the boxy outlines of yesteryears to interiors reminiscent of the past, auto manufacturers are diving into their historical collections to sculpt the future.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class: STRONGER THAN THE 1980s
A striking demonstration is provided by Mercedes-Benz, particularly with their G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s. This edition recaptures design elements from the initial W460-series Geländewagen, the vehicle that sparked the enduring popularity of the modern G-Wagon. The SUV is available in MANUFAKTUR agave green or Colorado beige, and it features orange indicator lights, matte black bumpers, and vintage-style badging as a nod to its past.
The interior echoes the ’80s aesthetic, featuring dove grey accents and a handle labeled “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s”. This vehicle is like a time capsule, yet it’s been equipped with the latest technology and comfort features of the modern G-Class. The blend gives off a sense of novelty while maintaining that nostalgic charm.

Porsche 911 Spirit 70: A Heritage Hybrid
Porsche excels at blending tradition and modernity, as demonstrated by the new 911 Spirit 70. Only 1,500 of these vehicles will be produced, based on the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet. It receives an Olive Neo paint job, Bronzite accents, and black silk-gloss racing stripes for a distinctive look. The design pays homage to Porsche’s models from the 1970s and early ’80s through elements like a crest reminiscent of 1963 and gold badges.
Inside, a refreshed black-and-olive Pasha pattern brings to mind one of Porsche’s most recognized interiors. The entirely digital dashboard continues to echo analog gauges, suggesting that feelings and memories can coexist with performance and innovation. Under the hood, a powerful 541 hp hybrid boxer engine guarantees it remains anything but outdated.

Land Rover Defender V8 Soft Top: Built by Hand, Styled by History
Land Rover’s revitalization of the Defender Soft Top could be the most rugged option in the return of retro designs. The Classic Defender V8 Works Bespoke Soft Top brings back a convertible Defender for the first time since 2016, custom-built from existing vehicles, each enhanced with a 405 horsepower V8 engine, Alcon brakes, and a contemporary suspension system.
The unique features that set it apart are the meticulous efforts to maintain original elements, such as canvas hood options, Wolf wheels, and tie-downs reminiscent of North American NAS 90. Customers have the freedom to customize almost everything – from leather accents to surfboard holders – yet the overall appearance maintains a strong connection with the past.
Why Retro Still Works
As a gamer, I’m not about clinging to the past, but rather, I’m all for emotional narratives in design. In an industry where sleek and minimal electric vehicles rule, retro-inspired rides add depth, character, and unique identity. These designs aren’t about starting from scratch; they’re more like revisiting an old favorite with a fresh twist.
Additionally, this feature allows brands to distinguish themselves visually in a sea of similar designs. For instance, many contemporary cars have sleek, aerodynamic shapes and LED lighting signatures. However, retro styling elements such as the boxy G-Wagon, the Pasha interior, or the canvas roof on a Defender, not only evoke nostalgia but also break through the monotony of today’s design trends by offering a unique, personal, and iconic touch.
