Is new UK thriller with Eve Myles and Katherine Kelly worth a watch?

In the trailer for Paramount+’s new crime thriller, The Crow Girl, DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles) is cautioned to tread lightly. However, it soon becomes apparent that she doesn’t adhere to such advice – it’s simply not in her nature to do so.

She excels at being unyielding and steadfast, which proves beneficial as she diligently hunts for the murderer of adolescent males.

Working alongside my team on this case, I have the pleasure of collaborating with psychotherapist Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly from Coronation Street and Mr Bates vs the Post Office). As we delve deeper into the investigation, we uncover a web of abuse and betrayal that adds layers of complexity to our mission.

Contrary to what might initially seem, this isn’t merely a hook to reel you in; instead, “The Crow Girl” is an engrossing series that will pull you further and further into its grimy underworld, episode by episode. A significant part of its appeal lies in the captivating performance of the “Torchwood” star portraying Jeanette.

The quick-witted nature of this character draws you in immediately, making her bulldozer personality seem endearing rather than arrogant or pushy. Her habit of challenging authority, her refusal to take ‘no’ for an answer, and her bluntness are made appealing due to the skillful way they’re portrayed by Myles. She combines dark humor with straight-forwardness, resulting in a sharp, entertaining, and undeniably charming delivery.

In my perspective, she’s a powerhouse at work, commanding respect and achieving results, but at home, things aren’t quite as smooth sailing. The bond between her, her husband Alex (Raphael Sowole), and their son is rich in love, yet it’s also deeply strained. We’re like two ships passing in the night, stretched thin and out of tune with each other.

Family conflicts reveal intriguing aspects of the character, making them stand out. It also exposes a weakness that usually doesn’t show up in strength-centered situations.

Kelly is the other side of what is intriguing about The Crow Girl.

Kelly’s portrayal of Sophia presents a blend of nuances. She is simultaneously gentle and confident, approachable to her clients and others while maintaining a sense of distance in her personal life. This duality makes her an intriguing enigma that we follow episode by episode, hoping to unravel the mystery behind her character.

Despite sharing certain characteristics, such as being strong and straightforward, the contrasting traits of these two women – Jeanette’s turbulent nature versus Sophia’s tranquility – form a harmonious yin-yang dynamic. This balance contributes to their working relationship becoming not just friendly, but also deeply passionate.

The connection between them burns with a gentle, steady flame, and they complement each other beautifully, filling voids that neither could on their own.

Although this story might not seem like a typical romance, it unfolds as a complex and intricate murder mystery that expands beyond its initial scope. As more pieces fall into place, various elements emerge that divert the investigation’s focus, eventually reaching a point where further shifts become impossible.

It takes some time for all the parts of the puzzle to align, with hints scattered throughout leading the way, but luckily The Crow Girl manages to make each segment of the mystery captivating on its own before they finally converge.

The pace of the crime thriller on Paramount+ is perfectly balanced. It strategically intensifies the tension in key moments, instilling a feeling of impending peril and uncertainty, leaving you constantly on edge, expecting trouble around each corner.

It’s a twisty, ride that will make you glad you hopped on the viewing train in the first place.
