Is Mrs. Flood Controlling The TARDIS? Here’s Why I Think So!
Caution: Contains spoilers for episode 3 of Doctor Who season 15, titled “The Well.”
In season 15 of Doctor Who, it seems like the TARDIS is landing haphazardly as usual, but I suspect that something more deliberate is at play during Ncuti Gatwa’s second stint as the Fifteenth Doctor. Historically, the TARDIS can be guided by the different incarnations of the Doctor, but this sentient blue box often has a mind of its own when it comes to choosing its next destination. In fact, I don’t believe even the TARDIS understands why it’s been landing where and when it has in the early episodes of Doctor Who season 15.
In “The Robot Revolution,” the first episode of Doctor Who‘s season 15, we find that the TARDIS can’t immediately return Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra home. Instead, the Doctor and his new companion are forced to take an indirect route, a journey we later come to know as “the long way round.” This plot twist forms the basis for the season 15 storyline, with our Time Lord duo often finding themselves in various locations throughout time and space, allowing the Doctor’s Vindicator to collect the necessary navigational data to return Belinda safely to May 24.
The Doctor’s Two Vindicator Landings In Season 15 Don’t Feel Random
Fifteen has already had 2 incredibly important adventures
At the conclusion of episode 3 in Doctor Who’s fifteenth season, titled “The Well,” it is revealed that the Doctor has twice deployed his TARDIS by this point. Each of these landings brings about significant events for two distinct reasons. First and foremost, encountering Alan Cumming’s character, Mr. Ring-a-Ding/Lux Imperator, turns out to be incredibly timely from a narrative standpoint. Considering the various locations Fifteen could have materialized in so soon after vanquishing Sutekh at the end of the previous Doctor Who season 14, it seems rather fortuitous that he almost instantly finds himself facing another figure from the Doctor Who Pantheon. Given the vastness of the universe, this coincidence appears to be more than just a fluke.
Following their departure from 1950s Miami, Fifteen and Belinda find themselves on an alien planet reminiscent of a never-before-seen location in Doctor Who. However, over time, “The Well” unveils itself as a continuation of “Midnight,” where Fifteen encounters an unexpected reunion with a monster last seen in the 2008 episode starring David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor. Despite the countless possibilities for the TARDIS to materialize elsewhere after “Lux,” it surprisingly landed on a planet that the Doctor had visited previously.
Something’s Controlling The TARDIS, And I Think It’s Mrs. Flood
There is quite clearly more to Anita Dobson’s character than meets the eye
As a seasoned movie critic, I find it intriguing that the Doctor’s recent adventures seem to align too perfectly, particularly given the hints dropped during the Disney era of Doctor Who about powers beyond the Doctor’s comprehension. Therefore, I propose a theory: Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson) might be the mastermind behind the TARDIS’ landing sites in the early episodes of season 15. It’s plausible that she could have also introduced Fifteen to Belinda, given their current neighborly relationship, and interestingly enough, she previously resided next door to Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday. This connection is worth exploring further.
It seems quite apparent that there are many secrets surrounding Mrs. Flood’s true identity. Her frequent interactions with the audience during Doctor Who are remarkably uncommon, implying an extraordinary degree of power and self-awareness seldom seen among the series’ characters. Furthermore, Mrs. Flood appears to take notice of the Doctor’s Vindicator each time she makes her recurring appearances at the conclusion of “The Well.” This hints at a possible connection to the TARDIS’ navigation systems, even though it doesn’t definitively prove that she is responsible for the blue box’s recent troubles. However, it certainly raises questions about her potential involvement.
How Mrs. Flood Could Be Controlling The TARDIS In Doctor Who Season 15
She could be a member of the Pantheon, or someone else entirely
It appears that Mrs. Flood has quite a bit of knowledge about the Doctor and his TARDIS, even though they haven’t interacted directly. Her familiarity with Yoof Gatwa’s character and the famous time-and-space vessel was evident as early as 2023’s “The Church on Ruby Road.” Add to that her talent for breaking the fourth wall, which suggests other unusual traits. Some speculate that Mrs. Flood might secretly be a member of the Pantheon. Considering she took on narration duties during season 14’s finale and could potentially become the God of Stories, this theory seems plausible.
In this case, she would have the ability to delve into or converse with the Doctor’s narrative. The depth and allure of his existence might prove irresistible for the Storyteller Deity. If not a member of a Pantheon, Mrs. Flood could be an entirely novel character, or potentially someone from the classic era of Doctor Who. Lately, Russell T. Davies has been favoring characters from the past in his productions. It’s plausible that a character like the White Guardian might align with Mrs. Flood’s characteristics, but it remains to be seen who Dobson is actually portraying in Doctor Who.
