Is Mickey Rourke’s Celebrity Big Brother Appearance a Cry for Help?

Mickey Rourke’s arrival at the Celebrity Big Brother house on Monday evening was quite unruly.

In a recent event, the 72-year-old actor drew criticism for his unsettling actions toward host AJ Odudu. These actions led to a wave of strongly disapproving comments from viewers on various social platforms.

As a die-hard admirer, I must admit, I found myself questioning Mickey’s wellbeing when he seemed somewhat bewildered upon his entrance. However, given his longstanding health struggles, which have been a constant companion since his boxing years, it’s not unreasonable to attribute his behavior to these ongoing challenges.

He’s had a history of fighting substance abuse (both drugs and alcohol), which some say contributed to his professional downfall over time. Additionally, he’s admitted responsibility for this decline and has undergone plastic surgery to repair facial wounds sustained earlier.

When speaking about X (previously known as Twitter), people expressed their worries about Mickey’s health, noting that Mickey seemed confused and unaware of the situation.

They penned: ‘Mickey Rourke has absolutely no idea where he is and what he’s doing lmao.

‘Is that mickey person ok he doesn’t seem like he’s on this planet. what’s wrong with him??’

Frankly, I must admit that’s one of the strangest entrances I’ve ever seen, and truth be told, there have been quite a few peculiar ones throughout history. To be completely honest, I find it difficult to imagine Mickey Rourke making it through the week without any issues.

‘How are they letting Mickey Rourke on tv like this,’; ‘Mickey is going to be car crash TV.’

Yet, while some fans are worried, Mickey’s actions might stem from the long-term health problems he has been dealing with ever since his boxing career.

In the past, he has struggled significantly with substance abuse issues, involving both drugs and alcohol. He has admitted responsibility for the downfall of his career throughout the years.

The actor previously embarked on an amateur boxing career between 1964 to 1973.

Mickey started his fighting journey as an amateur at the age of 12 and continued until his twenties. Over this period, he managed to secure 27 victories while experiencing just three defeats.

Afterward, he chose to focus primarily on his acting career, appearing in movies such as Rumble Fish, The Pope of Greenwich Village, 9 1/2 Weeks, and Angel Heart.

After that, he went back to his career in professional boxing in 1991, but this period was marked by numerous injuries such as a fractured nose, a cleft tongue, a flattened cheekbone, and memory loss.

Meanwhile, in 2009, he opened up to TopMob about having cosmetic surgery to fix facial injuries.

He mentioned that most of the reason for his visit was to fix the damage done to his face due to boxing, but unfortunately, he ended up going to the incorrect professional to repair his facial features.

‘I had my nose broken twice. I had five operations on my nose and one on a smashed cheekbone.’

He added: “I underwent an operation to remove cartilage from my ear for nasal reconstruction, followed by additional surgeries to clean out the cartilage due to slow healing of scar tissue. I consider this procedure to be one of the most excruciating operations I’ve experienced.

That very year, the celebrated actor shared that medical professionals had earlier advised him to cease his struggles due to concerns about his deteriorating memory.

2009 interview with Interview Magazine: “I began experiencing some memory loss problems. After undergoing a neurological examination, the doctors told me, ‘It’s time for you to give up the fight.’

Additionally, I continued pleading with them for one final bout, another chance, and the physician inquired, “What compensation will they offer you?” Initially, I had agreed to fight three more times, one of which was for a contention for a cruiserweight title.

I told him I had three fights left. But he warned me, ‘You can’t take any more blows to the head, your brain health is already poor.'”

This version retains the original meaning and maintains a conversational tone while being easy to read for most people.

Previously in 2022, the former boxer admitted that he underwent multiple MRI scans over time because of the several concussions he experienced throughout his career.

‘Gotta make sure “the head isn’t scrambled eggs,”‘ the Man of God actor wisecracked.

Previously, Mickey shared his remorse over using steroids and consuming large meals six times daily to bulk up for the 2008 film, The Wrestler, elsewhere last year.

In a consistent manner, the actor continually maintained that he never relied on a muscle-building supplement during the production of the Academy Award-recognized movie to create his imposing physique.

However, pondering over his actions on Instagram, the celebrity eventually confessed to using the substance and shared that it took roughly four to five years for him to lose the excess weight.

In my own words, “I recently posted a photo from the set of a movie, and I captioned it as I wrapped up my two-hour training session. It reminded me of an old film project I worked on called ‘The Wrestler.’

I truly wish I hadn’t gained 70 pounds just to fit a certain image… I didn’t feel at ease in my body, and it took about 4 to 5 years to return to weighing 180 again.

The plan wasn’t particularly well-structured, as it turned out; I did resort to using steroids and consumed colossal quantities of food six times daily.

It was quite foolish of me to realize that the significant achievement I made was spending countless hours at the gym. Now looking back, I deeply regret this choice as it was one of many poor decisions I’ve made throughout my life. Seeing pictures of myself only intensifies this feeling.

I’m not claiming to be the smartest person around, but maybe my thoughts can reach someone who aspires to grow and succeed.

The movie centers around an aging pro wrestler, who is forced to hang up his gloves, yet his search for a fresh identity beyond the ring proves to be a demoralizing battle.

Mickey was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category due to his portrayal of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson in the film.

2009 saw Mickey refute allegations that he resorted to growth hormones or questionable performance-enhancing substances to sculpt his body.

In an interview with Men’s Journal, he stated: “I used certain substances that might not fall under the category of steroids, but they were quite potent supplements – not your average ones.

Celebrity Big Brother continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
