Is Marvel Planning a Crossover Between Spider-Man and Daredevil?
The finale of Daredevil: Born Again has left a big Easter egg hinting at potential crossover with Spider-Man, adding to the excitement surrounding this new Marvel Cinematic Universe entry. Previously running on Netflix from 2015, Daredevil has been revived in the MCU by incorporating significant elements of its original story and cast. When Marvel Studios took over their TV projects and canceled Daredevil, many assumed Charlie Cox’s run as Hell’s Kitchen’s Devil would come to an end; however, it seems that these plans have been revisited.
Initially, when it was revealed that Cox would return to his role, and his debut came early in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it became apparent that he was a permanent addition to the MCU. Now, with the first season out, the potential for this character is immense, drawing from comic books for numerous potential team-ups and the Netflix Marvel series for more. However, a significant clue from the finale of season 1 hints at a well-known Spider-Man possibly teaming up with Daredevil, following their initial encounter in No Way Home.
Daredevil: Born Again’s Showrunner Addressed The Spider-Man Easter Egg In The Finale
Dario Scardapane Was In The Dark About The Spider-Man Reference
In the climactic scene of the final episode of “Daredevil: Born Again”, Karen and Daredevil are surveying Red Hook, but Matt’s recent injury and the heavy security on the premises have Karen urgently advising Matt not to enter without a strategy. Matt agrees and they start devising a plan, with Matt saying, “We need backup.” At this point, the music in the background seems to echo the Spider-Man theme, suggesting a potential team-up between these superheroes. However, the showrunner for “Born Again”, Dario Scardapane, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he was unaware of this Easter egg being included at that specific moment.
It’s amusing since being part of a grand universe like the MCU means we each have our unique territories. In our case, it’s Hell’s Kitchen, which is somewhat distant from Avengers Tower. We mostly stick to our area until someone asks, “What about…?” When executives, colleagues from other shows, or movie characters express curiosity about our world, they often inquire, “What do you think of…?” However, I haven’t received any such queries regarding Spider-Man yet.
This event carries significance in multiple aspects. Firstly, its casual inclusion during the showrunners’ tenure might point towards an orchestrated move from the higher-ups at Marvel, possibly signaling a potential crossover in the works. Secondly, the use of Spidey’s theme song implies that the street-level superheroes, who have frequently collaborated in the comics, could get an opportunity to cross paths within the MCU, given that all pieces can be strategically arranged behind the scenes to make this a reality.
I’m Convinced Marvel Is Setting Up A Spider-Man And Daredevil Crossover
Spider-Man & Daredevil Are Destined To Team Up In The MCU
It’s challenging for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to fully utilize Spider-Man, as the character’s live-action rights are held by Sony. However, due to the triumph of the MCU and enthusiastic fans’ wishes to see Spidey in action within it, a collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios was established, resulting in the Spider-Man trilogy in the MCU and his appearances in films like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Yet, the rights for TV shows are a different matter and could potentially either facilitate or impede Marvel’s efforts to introduce Spider-Man into future series such as Daredevil: Born Again season 2.
If Marvel has managed to collaborate with Sony or was aiming to generate excitement among fans by hinting at such a collaboration, we might be witnessing the beginnings of some upcoming joint projects. Given Marvel’s careful approach when it comes to show content, the inclusion of this theme indicates that something related could be under development. This isn’t limited to on-screen appearances; it could also mean collaborations in other formats.
How The MCU Could Pull Off A Spider-Man And Daredevil Crossover
There Are A Couple Of Options For How The Crossover Could Happen
The series “Daredevil: Born Again” appears to be an ideal opportunity for including Spider-Man, given that the initial season laid the groundwork around masked figures serving as heroes. Since Doctor Strange has ensured Spider-Man’s identity remains unknown, it seems increasingly plausible that he could be perceived as a vigilante. Furthermore, the prospect of witnessing Spider-Man engaging in a physical confrontation with Kingpin in live-action is truly enticing, given their longstanding ties within the Marvel Comics and animated series.
Should the prospect be too tough, Marvel might opt for a collaboration on the silver screen, where Daredevil could team up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. In the upcoming Spider-Man: A Fresh Start, we find Peter Parker grappling with maintaining his double life as a masked vigilante without anyone knowing his secret. It’s plausible that he forges an alliance with Murdock, another New York City hero, and the two develop a bond. If this is the direction they choose, it could shed light on why the Born Again showrunner remains puzzled about the theme’s inclusion.
Why A Spider-Man And Daredevil Crossover Needs To Happen Sooner Than Later
There Is A Limited Amount Of Time Before The Crossover Potential Could Run Out
If Marvel doesn’t act swiftly on this, they might miss their opportunity completely. With Daredevil expected to launch a new season annually, and Brand New Day scheduled for 2026, these heroes have some key chances to collaborate. However, when Avengers: Secret Wars concludes the Multiverse Saga, it’s uncertain when or where the characters might appear next. Secret Wars could possibly initiate a soft reboot in the MCU, and it’s challenging to foresee how this would affect the established heroes.
Given the uncertainties surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-Multiverse Saga, the possible departure of actors like Holland and Cox, and the ambiguity about Marvel’s future plans, it’s crucial that they move swiftly with their decisions. While there might be a chance for Daredevil and Spider-Man to cross paths in the epic saga known as “Secret Wars,” the ending of “Daredevil: Born Again” seems to suggest something sooner, possibly focusing on just a select few heroes. If this collaboration occurs, it would mark a significant milestone for comic book movies and the MCU as a whole, so let’s hope that “Daredevil: Born Again” doesn’t ignore this hint in season 2.
