Is James Gunn’s Superman a Political Tool? Rumors of Musk and Ukraine Allegories Emerge!
Is James Gunn’s Superman drawing political parallels to Ukraine and Elon Musk?
You might not be aware, but there’s an upcoming movie by director James Gunn, and interestingly enough, it revolves around Superman. However, the key point to emphasize here is that this film is directed by James Gunn.

Moving forward, the forthcoming “Superman” movie by director James Gunn, set for release on July 11, 2025, is amping up its marketing push with fresh trailers, whispers, film snippets, merchandise, and it seems like you can’t escape the presence of James Gunn everywhere.
A specific rumor has sparked intrigue about possible comparisons to actual individuals and conflicts, notably those related to a tech figure whose name sounds like “Zuck” and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine dispute. On platforms such as X, these speculations are being fanned by discussions among fans, who believe that Gunn could be incorporating subtle references to real-world events in the movie’s plotline.

Here’s another way of expressing it: Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, is reportedly going to become a tech-savvy billionaire with a knack for interfering in both U.S. and international politics. Now, doesn’t that sound familiar? Of course, these similarities are only speculative, but some might refer to such occurrences as “coincidences.

The same whispers also hint that the movie plot could include allusions, albeit not overt ones, to the Russia-Ukraine dispute. This might involve portraying Superman’s dilemma in upholding his neutrality or preventing global tensions from intensifying, a theme Zack Snyder has previously addressed.
Some enthusiasts of X have proposed that perhaps the movie’s alleged change from Superman’s traditional “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” slogan to “the Human Way” might indicate a storyline where Superman is confronted with real-world geopolitical issues similar to those in Ukraine. This could involve him trying to strike a balance between intervening personally to save lives, while also considering the potential for exacerbating global conflict and becoming entangled in the complex situations that would inevitably arise.

From the trailers we’ve seen so far, it appears that Lois Lane is grilling Superman about his travels abroad, hinting that the upcoming movie might delve into this theme. Previously, Snyder attempted a similar narrative in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman, but critics found it lacking and the film wasn’t successful. These rumors raise doubts about whether Gunn can effectively manage such complex themes in his upcoming Superman. (Even though Snyder did it first, he didn’t do it well enough to save 2016’s Batman vs. Superman from failure.)
Additionally, the speculated late-stage modifications to the movie (as reported by sources like World of Reel) and the rumored removal of around 20 minutes of content might have potentially reduced or eliminated any subtle social commentary within the film, shredding it to pieces.

If the references to tech entrepreneurs and the Russia-Ukraine situation persist in the final version of Superman, then it will be challenging for James Gunn to weave these themes seamlessly into the film’s storyline without appearing too forceful with symbolic comparisons or oversimplifying complex geopolitical issues, potentially alienating some viewers.
Can he pull it off? One way or the other, we’ll have our answer soon.
