Is Dwayne leaving Death in Paradise… again?
As a devoted fan of Death in Paradise, I must say that this Christmas special was nothing short of extraordinary! With the introduction of Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet), the tension that ensued, and Dwayne’s (Danny John-Jules) life-altering decision, it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
Death in Paradise Christmas spoilers follow.
The Christmas episode of “Death in Paradise” was filled to the brim with suspenseful events. With the mysterious Santa murders, the introduction of detective Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) adding tension to Saint Marie, and his personal turmoil, there was no shortage of action.
In case you missed the significant change in Dwayne’s (Danny John-Jules)’s life, we can understand why.
Following an experience under the Witness Protection Program where I was tasked with safeguarding the supposed Santa impersonator, Tyrus (not exactly my favorite individual), Dwayne experienced a profound realization.
During the celebrations, he found himself missing his ill father Nelson (Ram John Holder), causing him to ponder deeply about the limited time they might still share in the future.
Despite successfully arranging to celebrate Christmas with his father and Tyrus with his daughter, Dwayne felt the need for a more lasting transformation. This led him to submit his resignation, giving up his badge.
To Darlene (Ginny Holder), I shared that it was a challenge for me to balance my time between being with Nelson and working for the Saint Marie’s police department, as I found myself stretched too thin.
He mentioned that he had just come to understand that there are significantly more vital tasks he should be focusing on in his life at this moment, sharing this thought with his father as they looked forward to many good days.
Is it possible that Danny might be departing from Death in Paradise, given he’s recently returned? Let’s take a look at the facts.
Is Dwayne leaving Death in Paradise?
Danny John-Jules’ character, Dwayne, departed the series during season seven, embarking on a significant journey with his father. He reappeared in the season 13 finale this year. Fans were just growing accustomed to his charming and lively demeanor when he announced that he would be retiring from the show.
There’s still a possibility that Dwayne might stay for a while longer, as he only spoke about turning in his badge, not departing from the island where he resides with his father.
Speaking on his decision to leave six years ago John-Jules told the Daily Mail:
“I was in the show for seven years and, you know what? I did the same interview for seven years.
Since I was asked the same questions by a hundred reporters, I felt, ‘It’s about time for me to depart. I believe, my personality hasn’t made any progress.’
However, the actor spoke of his return to the show and his character fondly, stating:
Putting on again the familiar shoes of Dwayne transports me straight into his unique realm nestled within the series, Death in Paradise.
“He’s a Marmite character – you can’t live with him, but you can’t live without him.”
Without doubting that John-Jules might still be involved in Saint Marie for some time, given his recent return, it’s plausible that his involvement may not be as significant as initially thought. As he adapts to his new circumstances without policing on the island, we might see a reduced role for him. Regarding Marmite, let’s just say our tastes differ.
Alternative interpretations might arise from this, opening up avenues for innovative plot developments, catering to John-Jules’ craving for creative stimulation. However, we’ll only know for sure with time.
