Irwin family Christmas window display at Myer terrifies shoppers: ‘I won’t be able to sleep for weeks’
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in observing and analyzing cultural trends, I must say that the reaction to Myer’s Christmas display is quite intriguing. While it’s essential to celebrate diversity and promote understanding, it seems that this year’s theme has stirred up a storm of emotions.
Myer’s iconic Christmas windows have startled shoppers this year with their Irwin-themed display.
Each year, the beloved family custom involves transforming the Myer store windows in Melbourne’s central business district, often adorning them with Christmas-themed decorations.
In this year’s presentation, the theme is ‘A Christmas Tale from Australia Zoo by Irwin,’ which unfolds through a series of six panes that illustrate daily life at the zoo during the holiday season.
It also features ‘detailed lifelike figures’ of Bindi, Robert and their mum Terri Irwin.
However, those who cherish the annual Christmas tradition are voicing their shock on social media about the controversial presentation.
User @brooke.alison.laven on TikTok shared multiple clips from their window, recording the awe-inspiring figures reminiscent of Irwin.
‘The [Myer] Christmas display of the [Irwins] in Melbourne is nightmare fuel,’ she wrote over the video, adding in the caption: ‘Have any of you guys seen Chucky?’
Several users took to the comments in agreeance over the ‘scary’ windows.
One person commented, “Wow, that’s really unsettling,” and another remarked, “They seem to pierce straight into your very essence.
‘I won’t be able to sleep for weeks,’ someone else said.
‘Madame Tussauds GHETTO EDITION,’ a user joked.
Meanwhile, others criticised the windows and questioned the Irwin family’s connection to Christmas.
‘What do they have to do with Christmas?’ one asked.
‘Are we sure it’s not the Halloween display?’ quizzed another.
The well-known unveiling of the Myer Christmas windows, traditionally held at their Bourke Street store in Melbourne’s central business district, was called off this year because of safety issues.
Recently, it was officially announced by the colossal department store chain that a cherished Christmas custom won’t take place this year.
Due to some new happenings and with the aim of maintaining the health and security of both our customers and employees, we regretfully announce that we won’t be hosting the event for revealing our Christmas windows on Bourke Street Mall this year.
The Christmas displays at Myer have traditionally embodied happiness and unity, and we continue to strive to offer a secure and enjoyable visit for everyone.
Pro-Palestine activist group Disrupt Wars planned to rally at Bourke Street Mall on Sunday.
The group shared on social media that they deem Christmas to be called off this year, as long as children in Gaza continue to suffer from such atrocities. There will be no celebrations or merriment under these circumstances.
In nearly 70 years, the traditional unveiling ceremony at Myer was only the second time it had to be called off.
The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
The cancellation of the time-honoured event sparked anger from Jewish leaders.

What do YOU think of Myer’s Christmas display?
Have your say
In a conversation with the Herald Sun, community leader and Anti-Defamation chairman Dr. Dvir Abramovich expressed his concern, saying, “Has everything lost its sanctity?
I’m deeply committed to the ideals of free speech, but let me clarify my stance: This isn’t just about freedom of expression; it’s more like an unhealthy takeover of a cherished, community-friendly custom. Such behavior has no room in our shared spaces.
As a devoted follower, I am captivated by Melbourne’s Christmas window displays that embody harmony, togetherness, and the enchanting spirit of the holidays, rather than promoting disharmony and conflict.
Let’s ensure that Christmas’s warm, loving essence isn’t twisted into a means for spreading hatred, resentment, or false information.
An official representative from Victoria Police acknowledged they had heard rumors about protesters intending to cause disruptions during the Myer event.
The spokesperson stated that we’ve asked them multiple times not to perform this action, but unfortunately, the group seems unwilling to comply with the law enforcement officers.
The cancellation has been met with public outrage.
In a straightforward manner, we can say that Georgie Crozier, the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council and a member of the Liberal Party representing the Southern Metropolitan Region, spearheaded the counteraction or response.
‘On Thursday evening, a post was made stating that the unveiling of Myer Christmas Windows has been cancelled due to a pro-Palestine demonstration. She expressed her dismay, labeling these activists as anything but noble protestors, rather, she called them unfortunate and pitiful bullies.’
Aussies also took to X to vent their fury.
Protesters against “disrupting war” are planning to intrude at the unveiling of Myer’s Christmas windows event on Sunday, where families with children will be present. One person commented, “You can’t get any more senselessly cruel than that.
As a lifestyle expert, I might rephrase that statement like this: “I can’t fathom why demonstrators would mar the joy of the Myer Christmas Windows, especially for the delight of young ones eagerly anticipating it. Why can’t they allow everyone to savor one peaceful Sunday?
