Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain retires after final touring gig in his 42-year run
As a seasoned rock enthusiast who’s seen more than a few drumsticks snap mid-performance, I can say with utmost sincerity that Nicko McBrain‘s retirement from touring is a bittersweet symphony. Over four decades of thunderous beats and unparalleled showmanship have left an indelible mark on the heavy metal landscape, and his absence will undeniably resound like a gong that’s lost its toll.
Over the weekend, Nicko McBrain said goodbye to the final group of heavy metal fans he’ll play for on tour with Iron Maiden.
As a seasoned music critic, I find myself reminiscing about the iconic beats of McBrain, a drumming legend who has pulsated the British heavy metal scene for over four decades with Iron Maiden. Just hours before the final performance of their Future Past Tour in Sao Paulo, Brazil, this maestro decided to hang up his drumsticks and bid farewell to the stage.
Following careful thought, I’m sharing my decision to ease away from the relentless touring rhythm, which brings a mix of sadness and happiness, the London-based musician expressed in a statement on their website. Notably, Saturday’s performance will mark my farewell concert with this band.

It has been confirmed by Iron Maiden that their original lead singer, Paul Di’Anno, who was part of the band from 1978 to 1981, passed away on Monday.
Nicko McBrain announced that he will continue to be an integral member of the Iron Maiden family, but he has decided to focus on various personal endeavors and existing businesses. These projects include serving as the international ambassador for British Drum Co., managing his percussion shop Nicko McBrain’s Drum One, leading his Iron Maiden tribute band Titanium Tart, and running his Florida BBQ joint called Rock-N-Roll Ribs.
“I look into the future with much excitement and great hope!” he said.
After McBrain’s declaration, Rod Smallwood, one of Iron Maiden’s managers, issued a statement on their behalf, along with fellow manager Andy Taylor.
Smallwood expressed his gratitude for McBrain’s unstoppable drive on the drum kit with Maiden for 42 years, as well as their friendship spanning beyond that time. He also mentioned that he and the rest of the band members will deeply miss McBrain.
“Such a bond is forever,” Smallwood said.

A multitude of enthusiasts assembled in San Bernardino on Friday, united in their recital of a passage from the Book of Revelation that hints at an approaching catastrophe.
The Friday and Saturday shows by Iron Maiden in Sao Paulo were described by Smallwood as a fitting “epilogue” for McBrain, since the band has traditionally held a unique bond with Brazil. Back in 1985, Iron Maiden delivered an iconic set at the Rock in Rio festival, a biennial event.
On Saturday evening’s performance, the lead vocalist, Bruce Dickinson, honored Mike Brain’s impact on the band during his speech. The band originated in East London back in 1975, and Mike Brain joined the group in 1982, replacing Clive Burr at that time. Since then, he has been recognized for his contributions on every album since “Piece of Mind,” which was released in 1983, according to Billboard’s report.
In his own words as captured on YouTube, Dickinson stated, “He was a drummer prior to my singing role. He was a pilot before I became a pilot. Now, he’s concluded,” expressing that while he’s not departing the band, he won’t be performing live with us anymore.
As attendees began chanting his name, McBrain rose from his drum set to take a bow.
In my opinion, the remainder of this evening should serve as a jubilant tribute to none other than Nick. A testament, you see, to the radiance of happiness he’s spread across the globe, not just here in Brazil.
Television
Actress Pamela Hayden, who has been a consistent presence on ‘The Simpsons’ for quite some time, shared that she is stepping away from the popular show to explore alternative avenues of creativity.
McBrain took a touring break last year following a stroke which temporarily paralyzed him. After undergoing intense physical rehabilitation for ten weeks, he resumed rehearsals and later made a comeback on stage for the Future Past Tour.
The musical group is set to resume its Run for Your Lives World Tour this coming spring, marking their 50th anniversary. Starting in May, the tour commences in Budapest. As revealed on Sunday, Simon Dawson, a previous collaborator with Maiden’s bassist Steve Harris on his solo endeavors “British Lion” (2012) and “The Burning” (2020), has been named as the new touring drummer for this event.
