Ira Steven Behr was told Star Trek: Deep Space Nine would always be overshadowed by Star Trek: Voyager

As a gamer who has traversed countless galaxies and timelines across various sci-fi universes, I can confidently say that Deep Space Nine (DS9) stands tall among the stars. While many were initially skeptical about a series set on a stationary spacecraft, DS9 proved them wrong, time and again.

From the get-go, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine faced its fair share of critics. Fans of Star Trek were accustomed to witnessing starships engaging in space battles, landing on new planets via away teams, and making first contacts – elements that were abundant in Star Trek: The Next Generation. So when Deep Space Nine was introduced, with the series being set on a space station instead, there wasn’t much initial enthusiasm. And just two years after the debut of Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager made its appearance on our screens.

At the start of season three, Michael came into my office and said,”Look, Ira. I want you to knowI love DS9, and I think you’re doing a great job, but you just have to prepare yourself that Voyager is going to be the flagship show. It will always be overshadowed by Voyager because it’s going to have a ship, it’s going to be on a journey to get back home. It’s just going to be way too in the pocket of the franchise for DS9 to compete.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admit that those words felt like waving a red flag in front of a bull, prompting me to take them as a challenge. And boy, did it pay off! The subsequent seasons brought forth some of the most outstanding Deep Space Nine (and Star Trek overall) episodes ever, such as “In the Pale Moonlight,” “The Visitor,” “Far Beyond the Stars,” “Trials and Tribble-ations,” “The Way of the Warrior,” “Duet,” and “Call to Arms.” Just a few examples among many that left me in awe.

Deep Space Nine wasn’t always a spacecraft in orbit, but it delivered intense drama alongside action, making for outstanding episodes. Sometimes, the absence of action only served to make these episodes even better. This is something that Star Trek excels at. Though the thrilling battle sequences and action sequences keep viewers on the edge of their seats, the exploration of characters and their relationships often told more captivating stories.

In contrast to being Star Trek’s flagship show in the nineties, Deep Space Nine is often seen as outshining its contemporaries due to the intricacy of its storylines, exceptional acting performances, and palpable camaraderie among characters. It rightfully earned a top-tier position among Star Trek series.
