inZOI: Gamers praise KRAFTON for removing anti-piracy tool Denuvo

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled about Kjun, the mastermind behind inZOI, deciding to bid farewell to Denuvo – that notorious anti-cheat software infamous for impacting gaming performance. This move is music to my ears!

Just a few days prior to the launch of inZOI on March 28, director Hyungjun ‘Kjun’ Kim revealed that they would be taking out Denuvo from the pre-release version. This decision came about following intense criticism from the community over the anti-piracy technology on the official inZOI Discord server.

What is Denuvo?

Denuvo is a security system that protects games from piracy by preventing unauthorized copying. It operates silently as you play, but some gamers have voiced concerns about it. Critics claim that Denuvo may consume high CPU resources and cause excessive write operations on storage devices, which could potentially shorten the lifespan of solid-state drives (SSDs).

In numerous video games, Denuvo has been incorporated. Games like Persona 3 Reload, the remake of Resident Evil 4, and titles such as FIFA 15 fall under this category. However, there are other games, such as Hitman 2 and inZOI, that have decided to forgo using this technology.

inZOI x Denuvo

The events started unfolding when a player from inZOI found out that the game was protected by Denuvo, and they posted about it on Reddit. This post ignited a passionate debate across various social media platforms.

Players of inZOI were worried about the possible downsides and potential impact on game performance due to Denuvo. However, it wasn’t confirmed if inZOI indeed used Denuvo, yet the game faced extensive criticism from users.

Following the valuable input from gamers like myself, the team behind inZOI acknowledged and tackled an issue head-on. On March 26th, Kjun made it known that they’d be taking out Denuvo from the early access phase. “Originally, we opted to include Denuyo for safeguarding our game against unauthorized distribution. However, we heard your concerns and are now making a change.

Initially, we thought implementing this change would maintain fairness for those who legitimately bought the game. But upon examining player feedback, it became apparent that our decision was not in line with what our gamers desired.

The director additionally expressed regret for failing to disclose the use of Denuvo during the trial phase to the player community. Recognizing that such action might increase the game’s susceptibility to piracy, they still see it as a means to make inZOI more “customizable and flexible.

In other words, ZOI will persistently inspire and facilitate imagination and creative expression, thereby providing novel encounters that could foster enduring and inventive delight within our community.

Mods are free!

InZOI positions itself as a platform where users can design unique worlds and adventures. The lead developer guarantees that this creative focus will remain central. As promised in the roadmap unveiling, the initial phase of official mod support is set for release in May. Moreover, Kjun has shared aspirations to broaden mod support across various aspects of the game, thereby enhancing players’ customization possibilities.

Kjun explained that as we progressed, it became evident that Denuvo might negatively affect players’ gaming experience more than initially thought. Being a team dedicated to prioritizing players, dropping the anti-piracy measure was an obvious choice for us. This move has positioned KRAFTON favorably within the community, where members feel their concerns are acknowledged and appreciated.

Users on Reddit and Discord have been commending the developers for their work. One user put it, “It’s clear they value players greatly, in my view!” Another Redditor agreed, saying, “This is the kind of thing I appreciate from game studios and creators: making player satisfaction a top priority.
