Okay, so ZOWIE’s gear might not look amazing when you just check the specs, and honestly, that’s by design. They actually explained it at the Starladder Budapest Major – they prioritize how things feel in-game, like how clear the motion is and how consistent everything is, over just having the highest numbers. It’s all about performance in competitive Counter-Strike, not just looking good on paper, you know?
At the Starladder Budapest Major, ZOWIE was everywhere – their monitors were used in the tournament, their booth was lively, and pro Counter-Strike players relied on their gear. But it wasn’t immediately clear why, after fifteen years, ZOWIE still takes such a unique approach to designing hardware for esports.
During a recent media event, ZOWIE and BenQ explained that their designs focus on the overall user experience, not just technical specifications. They emphasized that in competitive gaming, a player’s performance isn’t always determined by the hardware’s stats alone.
Why specs don’t explain performance
Competitive gamers often focus on numbers to measure performance. They compare things like DPI and refresh rates, assuming higher numbers mean better gameplay. However, that’s not always the case in reality.
Even though two monitors both claim a refresh rate of 360Hz, one can still look clearer during fast-paced games, while the other might appear blurry. This is because refresh rate isn’t the only factor affecting motion clarity.
According to Jay Wu, President of BenQ Europe, how clear motion appears isn’t something that can be measured with simple numbers. Even though a 360Hz refresh rate looks better than 300Hz on paper, you can still notice a difference in how smoothly things move when you actually see it in action.
This difference is especially important in games like Counter-Strike 2, where even tiny delays and the ability to quickly spot an opponent can determine the outcome of a match.
According to Wu, the most important aspects of Counter-Strike 2 are how smoothly it runs and how clearly players can see their opponents.
While a high refresh rate is important for smooth motion, it’s not the whole story. How quickly pixels change color, and how the display is calibrated, also significantly affect how clear moving images appear.
ZOWIE remains a key partner in professional Counter-Strike 2 because they believe true gaming skill goes beyond just technical specifications.
Performance must be felt
“For us, we want people to believe. You only believe after you experience it,” said Jay Wu.
At the Starladder Budapest Major, ZOWIE created an interactive experience for attendees. They had a raised stage where visitors could watch or participate in 5-on-5 matches of CS2, and a demo area with seven different ZOWIE mouse models to test. A ZOWIE technician was on hand to explain the benefits of each mouse.
Jay Wu believes that explaining products in a personal way – detailing how they suit individual needs, the research behind them, and their design choices – creates a far more meaningful connection with customers.
ZOWIE strives to help each player find the ideal mouse, taking into account factors like design preference—whether they like asymmetrical or symmetrical shapes—as well as hand size and grip style.
Just like getting a suit custom-made for the perfect fit, explaining the benefits of ZOWIE’s gaming gear for competitive players is something we continuously work on. It’s about highlighting the difference quality makes.
Wu explained that while they utilize websites and social media, it’s challenging to convey the reasoning behind their designs. He noted that most people won’t grasp the design until they actually experience the product firsthand.
According to Celsa Wu, BenQ’s Director of Esports Business, a challenge they’re facing is providing in-person events for all their fans. While online platforms like Discord are helpful for connecting people, she emphasizes the value of real, face-to-face interactions within the community.
ZOWIE connects with its community by organizing small, personal LAN events, often called ZOWIE Days, for around 20 to 30 people. These events give attendees a chance to try out ZOWIE products, which the company feels is essential for a good experience.
Today, customers often compare detailed product information before making a purchase. We don’t want to compete that way. Instead, we aim to be the obvious choice, relying on the strength of individual experiences with our brand.
Sponsoring big esports events like the Starladder Budapest Major gives ZOWIE a chance to connect with a huge audience, and it’s about more than just getting their name out there.
Why ZOWIE sponsors Counter-Strike events
ZOWIE monitors are so widely used by professional Counter-Strike 2 players that they’re frequently seen at tournaments, even when ZOWIE isn’t an official sponsor. This raises the question: what would ZOWIE gain by actually sponsoring the event?
Celsa Wu explained that for most tournaments, they set up a dedicated ‘Pros Experience’ room. This private 100 square meter space features six workstations, each equipped with their monitors and products, allowing professional players to test them out.
The ZOWIE Pros Experience room serves a dual purpose: showcasing our products and providing a dedicated space for professional players who already use ZOWIE gear. This allows us to collect valuable feedback and data directly from them. We set up the room well in advance of events like the Starladder Budapest Major to ensure everything is ready.
According to Celsa Wu, you need to become an official sponsor to be able to officially serve the professional players.
In addition to the booth and pro experience room, ZOWIE supplied 180 monitors for the Starladder Budapest Major and sent a team of technicians to ensure everything was working perfectly.
Jay Wu explained that before any matches begin, the team carefully checks every monitor to ensure the software and settings are working properly. Their goal is to provide players with a flawless experience, which requires significant preparation.
As a gamer, I’m always hyped about gear, and ZOWIE’s been doing some cool stuff behind the scenes. They’re hooking up pro players with customized mice – I even saw some of them being used on stage at the Starladder Budapest Major! The really crazy part? Some of those mice aren’t even out yet!
Why ZOWIE Designs for Players, Not Trends — Even in 2025
Pro players using invisible ZOWIE tech
I was really surprised to hear in my recent chat with Xpsp that a ton of pros at the Starladder Budapest Major – over a dozen, actually – were using ZOWIE mice! But it wasn’t just any ZOWIE mouse; BenQ told me they’re completely customized for each player, built using a combination of what the pros tell them and data about how they actually play. It’s cool to see that level of personalization!
ZOWIE highlighted Team Spirit – home to star Counter-Strike 2 player Danil “donk” Kryshkovets, widely considered one of the best in the game – as a team using their products, though they didn’t name any other specific players.
Yet, ZOWIE has no intention of selling these mice to the mass market.
According to Celsa Wu, Team Spirit is currently testing some new products. They collaborated with the team on custom items that might not actually become available to the public. The reason? The players have unusual ways of holding things, and a product designed for their grip style might not appeal to most customers.
Celsa Wu added that requests for customization are common, but rarely approved.
We get a lot of requests for custom work, but it’s hard for us to accept them,” explained Celsa Wu. “We’re especially cautious with branded products. We don’t want customers to realize a mouse has been modified or what those changes were, and that’s partly because we often have to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Has any player ever won a tournament with a custom ZOWIE mouse?
“Of course,” said Celsa Wu.
These adjustments cover a wide range of details, from how the mouse clicks feel to its physical size and form. However, ZOWIE typically keeps these precise settings private, sharing them only with the players who use their products – and that exclusivity might be what makes them so special.
I get that looking at specs can tell you some things, but honestly, you really need to use a product to see how it actually performs. ZOWIE totally understands that – they know specs don’t tell the whole story!
Rather than trying to appeal to everyone, the brand focuses on creating a premium experience. This includes offering personal demonstrations, building competitive gaming setups, carefully inspecting equipment, and even designing unique hardware specifically for top professional players—even if these items aren’t available for sale to the general public.
It’s apparent that ZOWIE prioritizes being subtly effective over flashy speed or large-scale changes. Their strategy centers on consistent, reliable performance, and this steady approach continues to be successful in Counter-Strike 2.
