Invincible Season 4 Reveals Series’ 6th Major Recast Character

Okay, so everyone talks about how shockingly violent Invincible is – and yeah, it’s definitely earned that reputation! But as a huge animation fan, what really blows me away is the voice cast. Seriously, it’s incredible. Did you know that just Season 4 alone has seventeen actors who’ve also worked on Marvel projects? It’s a who’s who of superhero voice talent!

Given the show’s many popular actors, it’s not surprising that making Invincible has faced challenges with scheduling and costs. This has happened repeatedly, especially with Season 2, and recently included recasting a long-time supporting character’s voice actor.

Every Major Invincible Character Who Has Been Recast

William Clockwell: Andrew Rannells to Brandon Jones

In the fourth episode of Invincible’s fourth season, titled “Hurm,” Eve went to talk to Mark Grayson’s friend William Clockwell about her pregnancy. However, instead of hearing from actor Andrew Rannells, who played the role for three seasons, viewers were surprised by Brandon Jones (from Pretty Little Liars) taking over the part – and bringing a more energetic performance.

Like many casting changes, this could just be due to scheduling conflicts. It’s not the first time Justin Rannells hasn’t returned to a role – he previously wasn’t brought back as Prince Gumball in Season 2 of the animated series Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, which also had a lot of casting changes.

Robot: Zachary Quinto to Ross Marquand

In Season 4 of Invincible, the voice of Robot’s drones was changed. Zachary Quinto, who originally voiced the drones starting in Season 1, has been replaced by Ross Marquand, who also voices the character Rudy.

As a huge fan, it struck me that the decision to use someone else wasn’t just about saving money. Why hire two actors for the same role when the new guy, Marquand, really nails Quinto’s distinctive, almost robotic way of speaking? Still, I’m holding out hope that Quinto will be back for what sounds like a really important story arc for Robot in Invincible. You never know!

Titan: Mahershala Ali To Todd Williams

Following the first season of Invincible, Todd Williams took over the role of Titan, voicing the character in Season 2 after Mahershala Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, originally played him. Williams’ performance was so convincing that he was later asked to voice Blade in the Disney+ spin-off series, Marvel Zombies.

Honestly, it seemed pretty clear to me – and to a lot of other fans – that they didn’t bring Ali back because he’d have cost too much for such a small part. It’s become a big example for us of the show sometimes spending money on recognizable faces when it could be used better elsewhere.

D. A. Sinclair: Ezra Miller To Eric Bauza

Okay, so I was really surprised when I found out Ezra Miller, you know, The Flash from the old DC movies, voiced that wacky scientist in the first season of Invincible. But then, with all the stuff that came out about him, it made total sense why they swapped him out for Eric Bauza in Season 2. It was definitely a necessary change, given everything that was happening.

Sinclair has shown up occasionally throughout the series, but a particularly memorable moment happened in Season 4 when he tried to apologize to Mark for the trouble he caused their friends. Actor Bauza did an excellent job of showing Sinclair’s remorse as he sought to make amends.

Rick Sheridan: Jonathan Groff to Luke Macfarlane

Many viewers likely didn’t realize Rick Sheridan, William’s college boyfriend, was played by a different actor starting in Season 2. Luke Macfarlane took over the role from Jonathan Groff, but it’s understandable why people missed the change, as Groff only provided the voice for one episode.

Considering Groff’s extensive experience – including voicing Kristoff in the Frozen movies and playing King George in the original Hamilton – it seems strange he was initially given such a small part. It’s understandable why they chose to find a new actor when they decided to develop Sheridan’s character further.

Powerplex: Aaron Paul To TBA

The biggest casting change so far has been Aaron Paul’s sudden departure from Invincible after his excellent portrayal of Powerplex in Season 3. He said leaving the role was necessary because it was too emotionally draining, which is understandable.

Although a new actor for Paul hasn’t been named, his character’s storyline suggests he probably won’t be in Season 4. This gives the show’s creators time to cast someone new in the role.
