Invincible Season 4 Reading Guide: Which Comics To Read Before

The fourth season of Invincible is almost here! The first three episodes will start streaming on Prime Video on March 18th, meaning fans have less than two weeks to wait to see what happens next with Mark Grayson. The ending of season 3 has kicked off new storylines that closely follow the original Invincible comic books by Robert Kirkman.

Many viewers are likely already familiar with the entire Invincible comic series, but others are still reading it alongside the show. The promotion for season 4 has revealed that several storylines from the comics will be adapted, giving us a good idea of what to expect.

With season 4 of Invincible on the way, fans are wondering how much of the original comic book series it will cover and which issues are most relevant to read beforehand. Looking at how quickly the show adapted the comics in season 3, and knowing which storylines will be featured, gives a good idea of what to read – whether you’re a new reader or revisiting the source material.

Issues #66-#78 Will Certainly Be Covered In Invincible Season 4

Just to clarify, Invincible season 3 concluded with issue #65. Conquest is in GDA custody, Mark is healing from his injuries after their battle, Angstrom Levy has rejoined the Engineers, and Atom Eve is currently experiencing issues with her powers.

A good place to start a reading guide for Invincible season 4 is issue #66. This issue centers on Nolan Grayson and Allen the Alien’s adventures in space, where they gather allies for a planetary coalition preparing for war with the Viltrumites. This journey eventually brings Nolan back to Earth and leads to a reunion with his sons, Mark and Oliver.

The big showdown of the Viltrumite War happens in issue #78, with a massive, violent space battle involving Invincible, Omni-Man, and several Viltrumites led by Thragg and Conquest. These events will definitely be part of Invincible season 4, likely unfolding around the middle or towards the end of the season.

This section of the Invincible comic largely focuses on the Viltrumite War, but it also introduces events that will happen in season 4, such as Universa coming to Earth, Mark meeting Dinosaurus, and new fights with the Sequids and Flaxans. If you’re curious about the main plot of Invincible season 4, issues #66-78 are an excellent place to begin reading.

Invincible Season 4 Could Go As Far As Issue #89

However, the season’s story might not conclude there. It all hinges on how much Kirkman and co-showrunner Simon Racioppa plan to expand on the original comic book material, and which plot points they’re holding back for a potential fifth season of Invincible.

Based on current information, it seems likely that season 4 of Invincible will cover up to issue #89 of the comic series. Issues #79 through #89 are important because they build on and wrap up the major events of the Viltrumite War storyline.

To avoid revealing anything for those who haven’t read the comics and want to experience season 4 as a surprise, I’ll just say that the next 11 issues feature significant events that will impact almost all of the characters.

Okay, so things are really heating up with our core couples – Mark and Eve, Robot and Monster Girl, and even Nolan and Debbie are all facing some major turning points in their relationships. We also see Universa and Dinosaurus popping up consistently, and honestly, I think the creators are setting them up for bigger roles in season four. And a fun surprise? Powerplex makes a comeback during this arc, which I definitely didn’t expect!

Concluding issue #89 would create exciting cliffhangers for season 5 of Invincible. It feels like a good point to wrap up Mark’s storyline, leaving the audience both satisfied with what they’ve seen and eager for the next chapter.
