As a devoted fan who’s been following Invincible since its inception, I can’t help but feel like I’m stuck in a never-ending wait for the live-action movie. It feels like I’ve been on this rollercoaster ride since 2017, and it seems to be going nowhere fast!
Currently, due to Prime Video’s animated rendition, Invincible is among the top-tier superhero franchises globally, garnering much attention. Consequently, various parties are eagerly exploring possibilities. For example, Skybound Entertainment is working on a high-end video game, and a live-action film has been under consideration at Universal for quite some time.
The live-action movie initially announced in 2017 appears no nearer to materialization than it was six years ago. Now, creator Robert Kirkman has shared some insights on the project’s progress. Excitingly, it seems the production is still moving forward! However, disappointingly, seeing Invincible on the big screen may still be a distant dream. As for when we might expect to see this adaptation, details remain elusive; but Kirkman humorously suggested to The Direct that “it could take so long that Timothée Chalamet could portray Omni-Man.”
Essentially, Kirkman clarified that the film isn’t being cancelled. Instead, they’re being patient to ensure it turns out flawless. “It’s still in the process of creation,” he verified. “We’re still collaborating with Universal. Given the show’s success, I believe the movie needs to be exceptional. So, it’s taking a considerable amount of time to get everything right – like fitting all the puzzle pieces together and making sure everything functions smoothly so we can release a top-notch product.”
He went on to offer a somewhat disappointing update, revealing that the movie’s release isn’t coming anytime soon:
“So it’s been in development for a long time, and it’s probably going to be in development for a while longer. Okay, the comic is this one thing, and then this animated series is this other thing, and now this movie has to be this third thing. It’s very difficult, but we’ve got a good team behind it.”
If I were to make a guess, the movie is likely to debut once Prime Video’s adaptation of Invincible has concluded, allowing for some breathing room between releases given how great the TV show is. Although we don’t have an exact release date yet, Kirkman has suggested that the announcement for Season 3 will come later in 2021. Keep an eye out for updates on this exciting project!
