The world of Invincible is full of mysteries, with many strange dimensions and characters that aren’t fully explained in the show. Season 4 just solved one of the biggest puzzles, adding a new element not found in the original comics and giving viewers some much-needed clarity about the show’s complex background.
In the fourth episode of Invincible season 4, Mark unexpectedly finds himself in Hell, brought there by Damien Darkblood who needs assistance with a powerful new enemy. This enemy is Volcanikka, a villain who controls magma and plans to conquer Hell by driving out its demons—a move that’s just the first step in her ultimate goal: invading Earth. During his time in Hell, Mark uncovers crucial secrets about the Invincible universe, including mysteries that even his father, Omni-Man, never investigated.
Invincible Season 4, Episode 4 Explains Where All These Monsters Are Coming From
While trapped in Hell, Mark questions Damien about their location and wonders if Heaven exists. Damien then shares the history of Earth, a story unlike anything Mark could have imagined. He explains that Earth has experienced six distinct Ages. The First Age was filled with incredibly frightening and powerful creatures. The Second Age featured smaller, though still dangerous, beasts. Damien remains silent about the Third Age, sparking fan theories that it was the time of the dinosaurs.
The Vile first emerged during the Fourth Age, and Volcanikka has remained ever since. Demons arose in the Fifth Age, led by Satan. Humans then appeared in the Sixth Age, which is the current period in the world of Invincible.
According to the story’s lore, as time passes, creatures from older eras retreat further underground. Occasionally, they reappear, and some of the monsters Mark has battled actually come from a previous era. This explains the origins of all the monsters in Invincible, a question fans have had since the beginning of the show.
Invincible’s New Lore Totally Changes How We View Mark’s Universe
The new backstory revealed in Invincible is fascinating because it highlights just how different the show’s Earth is from our own. What’s more, it suggests that very few people are aware of Earth’s real history, with Mark Grayson being one of the few who knows what truly happened.
This backstory adds a sense of unity to the world of Invincible. Instead of monsters appearing randomly, their origins are now connected through the Six Ages, which explains their recurring appearances.
Damien’s recent statements strongly suggest that there’s no traditional afterlife in the world of Invincible. Hell is shown as a physical place on Earth, not a spiritual one, and Damien explicitly states that Heaven doesn’t exist. Since no other afterlife has been established, it appears that death in Invincible is permanent.
Invincible’s Ancient History Feels A Lot Like The Matrix
Interestingly, the backstory in Invincible creates a world that feels similar to The Matrix. Like Neo in the films, the characters discover that events aren’t happening for the first time – the Matrix has existed in cycles, each with a chosen One. This revelation dramatically expands the scope of their reality, showing them the world is far larger than they initially believed.
Mark is facing a similar situation. The Six Ages are like the repeating cycles in The Matrix, and Mark’s Earth is just one of many that have come and gone. This realization could cause Mark to question his entire existence later in Invincible, now that he understands the truth.
