Introducing the Paris 2024 Paralympic team for Great Britain
As a passionate follower of sports and an ardent supporter of Team Great Britain, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming ParalympicsGB team at Paris 2024! The numbers speak for themselves – a gender-balanced team, more females than ever before, a record number of debutants, and a mix of youth and experience that is simply unparalleled.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of athleticism and sportsmanship showcased during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Great Britain team truly shone, amassing a total of 64 medals! From the Women’s Trampolining to the Men’s 4×200 Freestyle Relay, they dominated various events. Now, it’s time for our ParalympicsGB Team to steal the spotlight and I couldn’t be more excited as the team members have now been announced!
The Paris Paralympics by the numbers
As a gamer, I’m super excited about Paris 2024, because it’s going to break records as the most gender-balanced Paralympic Games ever!
In Tokyo 220, there were 227 ParalympicGB athletes. In Paris 215 will be competing.
99 out of the total 215 athletes are females, making up 46% of the team. This is the largest percentage of female athletes that the team has ever had.
There are 22 sports in the Paralympic Games. Of those, Great Britain will compete in 19.
The swimming squad represents the largest portion of the team with 18 female and 9 male athletes.
1. As a passionate spectator, here’s an exciting piece of news: 14 young competitors are gearing up, among them is 13-year-old Iona Winnifrith. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, Para canoe athlete Jeanette Chippington, at the ripe age of 54, is preparing for her eighth Paralympic Games appearance.
1/3 of the athletes will be making their Paralympic debut in Paris.
Ones to watch at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris
Alfie Hewett, victor of Wimbledon, has claimed nine Grand Slam singles titles, but has yet to secure a gold medal at this elite level. Previously, he won silver medals in wheelchair tennis and doubles during the Rio 2016 games, and also took home a silver medal partnered with Gordon Reid in the year 2020.
Sarah Storey, our team’s most honored athlete, makes her return for a remarkable ninth straight Paralympic participation in the field of cycling. So far, she has amassed an impressive 17 gold medals.
Individuals participating for the first time aren’t beginners when it comes to the athletic arena. For instance, Rachel Choong may be a newcomer at the Games, but she’s no stranger to victory, having clinched the world championship in badminton a staggering ten times.
Penny Briscoe, leader of ParalympicsGB for the Paris 2024 Games, expresses her excitement over the diverse mix of seasoned athletes and fresh talents in our team. She also extends gratitude towards our dedicated support crew.
More than a third of the athletes in the ParalympicsGB team will make their Games debuts in Paris, and I am proud of the support these athletes – as well as our experienced Paralympians – will receive from the network of staff both in the UK and in France who have been working tirelessly to ensure ParalympicsGB is best prepared both on and off the field of play.
As an excited fan, I share Briscoe’s anticipation for the historic Paralympic Games. I can hardly wait to witness a multitude of gifted athletes striving to surpass their personal records in one of the world’s most remarkable cities.
Best of luck to the ParalympicsGB team that includes guides, partners, and copilots.
