Interview With The Vampire Showrunner Shares If They Will Rename The Show (Again): “The Bigger Question Is…”

The creator of the TV show Interview with the Vampire has talked about the possibility of changing the title again. Currently known as The Vampire Lestat, the show originally premiered on AMC in 2022 as an adaptation of Anne Rice’s famous novel. This new version has made some changes to the original story, which have largely been praised by viewers.

The second season of Interview with the Vampire finished the storyline based on the first book, as Louis de Point du Lac finished telling his life story to reporter Daniel Molloy. Afterwards, it was revealed that the series would be renamed The Vampire Lestat, after the second book in The Vampire Chronicles series.

Now that Louis has finished sharing his life story and explained what happened to Claudia, the series will turn its attention to Lestat, who created both Louis and Claudia. The show is based on Anne Rice’s extensive Vampire Chronicles book series, and it’s currently unclear how many seasons it will run – a question recently discussed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Rolin Jones, the showrunner, was questioned about potentially changing the show’s title again in future seasons, perhaps to ‘The Queen of the Damned.’ He explained that decisions about the show’s branding are made by producers higher up, but he personally believes evolving the title would clearly signal what each season focuses on. He said, “There are a lot of very, very smart people above me who are making those decisions. Yeah, I think it should go that way, because then you’ll know that’s what that is.”

Jones believes the key question isn’t what happens next, but when the story of Lestat will truly end. They’re blending ideas from across the series, potentially revisiting plot threads from Interview with the Vampire in The Vampire Lestat (season 3) and even incorporating elements from later books. You can find Jones’ complete explanation below.

The main question now is whether we’ve covered everything from the books. There are still sections of Interview with the Vampire that could come into play. We’re pulling material from all the books right now. While this season has a complete story arc, it really feels like the first half of a two-part story, so viewers should expect that.

The story tends to grow in scope, and we often leave plot points unresolved. It follows a familiar pattern: the first season introduces many questions, the second season answers most of them, but still leaves some smaller details open-ended. It’s a never-ending cycle of storytelling.

Season 3 will feature Lestat as a rock star on tour, while also delving into his past. The season is based on The Queen of the Damned, the third book in the Vampire Chronicles, and focuses on Akasha, the very first vampire created by author Anne Rice. Akasha was briefly seen at the end of season 2 and will be a major character in season 3, played by Sheila Atim, alongside other new characters from Rice’s work.

As a fan, I’ve always loved how the series handled its titles – Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat both felt perfect for their respective moments. Using just The Vampire Chronicles for everything doesn’t quite capture the same magic, in my opinion. I’m excited to hear The Vampire Lestat is aiming for a summer 2026 release, and I know it’ll be a while before we truly understand the full vision for the show. But I appreciate that the creators are even willing to consider changing the title down the line if it serves the story better.
