INTERVIEW – Silver and Blood Voice Director on on dual roles, creative process, acting philosophy, and more

Moonton Games’ subsidiary, Vizta Games, has unveiled its long-awaited 2D Gothic-style RPG titled “Silver and Blood” on both Android and iOS devices. Our team at GamingonPhone had the privilege of interviewing Stéphane Conicard, the voice director for Silver and Blood and Venture Capitalist for Theophane and Yggdrasill. During our conversation, he delved into his creative methods for roles, contrasted his experience with this project versus previous ones, and touched on a range of other topics.

On voicing both Theophane and Yggdrasill with distinct emotion and identity

To start off the interview, we inquired about his method for portraying characters that were strikingly dissimilar. Mr. Stéphane replied, “I find them distinct and usually don’t dwell too much on my approach.

He went on to clarify, “In essence, I’m adopting their feelings, their self-image, their thought patterns, and allowing them to guide me instead.

Getting into the character through time and instinct

When I inquired about his creative method, he disclosed that it doesn’t happen swiftly. Instead, he shared that “I usually read a script and then let it sit for a while.” He further added that “often, all the questions get answered after two or three days of pondering on it.

Balancing voice acting and direction in one project

Stephane Conicard has lent his voice to several iconic characters, one of them being Liquid Snake from the Metal Gear series, a role I’m fond of as well. Naturally, I was intrigued to learn about his perspective on this character compared to others. Interestingly, he shared that he also held the position of voice director for

In this case, the developer was more than happy to clarify questions about the storyline and scenarios, which proved incredibly beneficial for the director. He expressed that this made his job significantly simpler.

It was enjoyable to learn that this project would rank among his favorites, as he expressed, “The script is exceptional, and the acting was simply outstanding.” And it seemed evident that his statement, “As a director, what could be better than having a compelling plot and talented actors to work with?” conveyed the same sentiment.

Emotional highlights behind the mic

When I inquired about exciting backstage instances, he disclosed that there were several memorable instances during recording where he guided some deeply moving performances. “Directing Maya Graydon for Piera’s captivating monologue and Kate Nieland’s character was truly enjoyable, I must say,” he reminisced.

Why game acting feels like opera to him

In a discussion about what sets video game acting apart, he made an intriguing analogy: “Acting for video games is like opera compared to stage plays, it’s a more intense form of drama.” He went on to express his affection for the subtle nuances in the scripted scenes: “I adore every bit of underlying meaning in those scenes. It’s nothing short of magical.

Smooth sailing through strong preparation

Afterward, we engaged in a brief conversation regarding obstacles and unexpected incidents. However, due to his thorough preparation, he asserted that no significant hurdles occurred during the manufacturing process. Instead, he stated with assurance, “We were well-prepared and ready for any eventuality.

Finding the right tone for a stylized world

As a dedicated fan, I ponder over the delicate balance the game maintains, straddling the border between modernity and authenticity, which significantly shaped my directing approach. In simpler terms, I asked myself, “Where does the manga universe fit within the English language?

They got it right on the answer to “how to you hit the right notes, without becoming too cartoony?

He was drawn in by a complex and layered script

As I was attracted to this project, I found myself drawn to its intricate narrative. “Complexity is a rare find in gaming narratives, unlike traditional stories,” I mentioned.

He too provided insightful suggestions when responding, “It required a few re-reads to grasp the situation. However, you become more engrossed in the narrative as you delve deeper.

Advice for the next generation of voice actors

For those aiming for a career in voice acting, he shared insightful tips: “While talent and intelligence are crucial, it’s often the latter that gets overlooked. It’s important to discuss both.

He underscored the significance of recognizing emotional transitions, stating that “paying attention to these slight changes is crucial.” Specifically, he advised to “take in the director’s words carefully, truly listen attentively.

Letting the characters fade into the story

When reflecting on his work, Mr. Stéphane prefers not to draw attention to himself. Instead, he expressed that he’d like his role to blend seamlessly into the bigger picture, stating, “If I can do my part in making the story shine and fulfill both my roles as an actor and a director, then my job is well done.

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on this beta title because I’m thrilled about its global launch. Consequently, I was genuinely enthusiastic for my interview with Stéphane Conicard, the voice director of Silver and Blood. Now, I can’t wait to experience Theophane and Yggdrasill in the game even more.
