Interstellar IMAX release now set for December, despite viral rumors

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in virtual realities, I can’t help but see the drama surrounding the rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, “Interstellar“, as a roller coaster ride of emotions – a cinematic thrill ride that’s had me on the edge of my seat since February.

The tremendous box-office success of the three-hour biopic Oppenheimer raised some long-term questions in Hollywood about the viability of adult-centric entertainment — but in the short term, it prompted studios to look for ways to cash in on Christopher Nolan fever. In February, Warner Bros. rereleased Nolan’s time-travel spy movie Tenet. Then Paramount took the CinemaCon stage in May to announce a revival IMAX run of the director’s 2014 space odyssey Interstellar — a plan that is still in place, despite rumors to the contrary. The film is set to hit theaters this December, TopMob can confirm.

On Wednesday, rumors circulated that the plans for the film “Interstellar” might have fallen into a black hole during the summer due to carelessness at the studio. A user named misterpepp, posting on the BoxOfficeTheory forums and later shared on Reddit and other platforms, stated that the re-release scheduled for September 27, initially announced at CinemaCon, “has probably been canceled except for a small number of venues” due to “drama.” According to misterpepp, after the theatrical run of Interstellar, Paramount allegedly destroyed all of the original IMAX 70mm prints. The only remaining reels of the movie are kept by theaters that held onto them in anticipation of future screenings. The user claims that director Chris Nolan was upset about this because he didn’t approve of it.

Based on recent gossip, it appears that Paramount may have disposed of their 70mm IMAX copies of Interstellar. This potential move could lead to the September rerelease being canceled altogether or only available at theaters that still have a copy to screen.

The captured comments about the movie sparked great confusion among film enthusiasts. However, after spending numerous hours venting online, Paramount and IMAX eventually provided a clear explanation of their rerelease strategy, including a new release date: Dec. 6. It’s been confirmed that Interstellar will be shown in both IMAX 70mm format and digital screenings.

Regarding speculation that Paramount discontinued the 70mm prints of ‘Interstellar’, the studio chose not to respond to TopMob. However, reliable sources close to the studio informed Variety that these rumors are unfounded. While some prints have degraded due to wear and tear, making them unsuitable for cinema projection, Paramount’s archive actually holds more large-scale copies of ‘Interstellar’ than many of its other films.

The film “Interstellar” is renowned for introducing the viral meme of Matthew McConaughey crying, an amazing Hans Zimmer soundtrack, breathtaking visual effects depicting gravitational lensing, and TARS, a memorable modern movie robot. At present, it ranks as Christopher Nolan’s fifth highest-grossing film, earning $647 million globally. This figure is likely to increase when “Interstellar” is re-released for fellow IMAX enthusiasts like Nolan in December.
