Following the 2025 conflict between Israel and Iran, regulators criticized the platform for its poor performance in identifying and removing misleading content. During the crisis, fake videos went viral, and both governments and individual users were suspected of using AI to spread disinformation. The board determined that relying on users to report problems or simply adding warning labels isn’t strong enough to deal with the rapid increase and volume of today’s deepfakes.
The rapid increase in AI-generated content is making it harder for people to tell what’s real, leading to a general distrust of everything they see online. Experts are now calling for clear rules specifically for this type of content. They suggest a strong system for labeling potentially misleading AI-generated material, one that doesn’t depend on creators voluntarily identifying it.
The new badge is a good first step toward building trust between digital artists and their fans, showing a sensitivity to cultural concerns. However, some argue that a voluntary system has inherent limitations. Real progress against harmful misinformation won’t happen until platforms consistently use standards like those from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), rather than simply relying on creators to be honest.
