Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, might offer clues about what happened in her fractured friendship with Blake Lively.
After Taylor Swift released her twelfth studio album on October 3rd, her dedicated fans – known as ‘Swifties’ – immediately started analyzing the album’s hidden meanings in the lyrics and playful song titles.
Fans noticed three songs that seemed to be about specific people: one appeared to be a critique of singer Charli XCX, another was a poem about Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift’s fiancé, and a third strongly suggested inspiration from Swift’s close friend, Blake Lively.
Several sources have revealed to the Daily Mail that Taylor Swift’s song ‘Cancelled!’ is reportedly about Blake Lively and her legal issues with Justin Baldoni, who she previously worked with on the film ‘It Ends With Us’.
Okay, so I’m hearing from a source that Taylor and Blake *did* talk, and apparently, he apologized for getting her mixed up in all that legal drama. But PLEASE don’t read into it! On the tenth song of her album, *The Life of a Showgirl*, Taylor Swift seemed to extend an apology to Blake Lively, singing about the special connection she shares with friends who also understand what it’s like to be in the public eye.
The long-time friendship between the two became strained earlier this year when Taylor Swift unexpectedly became involved in Blake Lively’s legal battle with Alexis Baldoni. The case is scheduled to go to trial in March 2026. Swift is also the godmother to Lively’s children.
Even though Taylor Swift and Blake Lively are getting along better now, a source says fans shouldn’t anticipate Swift publicly taking Lively’s side in her disagreement with Justin Baldoni anytime in the near future.
Taylor and Blake have improved their relationship, but Taylor has stated she won’t publicly support or endorse Blake’s work.
In December 2024, actress Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, claiming he sexually harassed her while they were filming their movie, It Ends With Us.
One month after the initial claims, Baldoni and his company, Wayfarer Studios, responded by filing a $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and her publicist, Leslie Sloane. However, that lawsuit has since been dismissed.
Everyone involved has strongly denied the accusations. Recently, Lively took legal action, requesting that Wayfarer Studios and its leaders pay his legal fees, as well as additional damages and penalties, because of a lawsuit that was previously dismissed.
However, Baldoni’s court documents included screenshots of text message conversations where Lively frequently referred to Swift directly.
During a memorable moment, Lively jokingly seemed to portray herself as Khaleesi, a character from Game of Thrones, and referred to Swift as one of her ‘dragons.’
Baldoni’s documents also state that Taylor Swift attended a meeting held by Blake Lively in her New York penthouse. The meeting was about revisions to the script for the movie ‘It Ends With Us’.
Sources close to Swift have insisted that the singer had no knowledge of the meeting.
Taylor Swift, known for her song ‘My Tears Ricochet’ which appeared in the 2024 movie, received a legal request from director Francis Baldoni’s lawyers in May.
According to a legal document submitted by Baldoni’s attorneys, the Gossip Girl actress allegedly attempted to strong-arm Swift into publicly backing her and asked her to erase their text message history as Baldoni’s legal issues worsened.
Soon after, a spokesperson for Taylor Swift released a statement to the Daily Mail, criticizing the legal request as a sensational attempt to attract attention like typical tabloid journalism.
According to her representative, Taylor Swift had absolutely no involvement in the making of the movie. She wasn’t involved in casting, creative choices, the music, or even the editing process. In fact, she didn’t see the finished film until weeks after it came out, as she was busy on her record-breaking world tour throughout 2023 and 2024.
The statement argues that this legal request for documents involving Taylor Swift is simply an attempt to generate publicity and sensationalize the case, as she was one of twenty artists who licensed a song for the film. It claims the focus should be on the actual facts, not on using her celebrity status to attract media attention.
Only a few weeks after issuing the request, Baldoni’s team canceled it, and in September, a judge decided that Swift wouldn’t have to give a pretrial testimony before the trial begins in March.
Despite the public discussion, Taylor Swift appeared to separate herself from the controversy, which also seemed to end her friendship with Blake Lively.
Recently, it appears these two former close friends have been taking small steps to repair their relationship.
Another source told the Daily Mail that Taylor Swift and Blake Lively are actively trying to repair their friendship and regain each other’s trust, but it will take time.
According to a source, Taylor and Blake haven’t fully agreed on things yet, but they are making progress in understanding each other.
It’s uncertain if things will ever return to how they were. Rebuilding trust will be difficult, though Taylor is making an effort to listen. A complete resolution between them isn’t likely anytime soon.

When people started listening to ‘Cancelled!’, many noticed hints and possible allusions to Blake Lively woven into the song’s words.
In the chorus, Swift sings about appreciating her friends, even with their flaws and dramatic lifestyles. She enjoys them ‘cloaked in Gucci and in scandal,’ comparing them to things she also enjoys – a whiskey sour and beautiful but dangerous flowers.

Taylor said the song is totally about everything she’s gone through – all the times people have judged her and all the drama and scandals she’s been caught in throughout her career. Swift explained that she doesn’t simply drop people from her life because others disapprove of them. She makes her own judgments about individuals based on how they behave towards her and their choices.
