Inside Wendy Williams’ Battle for Freedom: The Guardian Controversy You Can’t Ignore
While Wendy Williams asserts that she has successfully completed a mental fitness evaluation, Daily Mail is delving deeper into the role of Sabrina Morrissey, her appointed legal guardian, under scrutiny.
Williams, aged 60, declared on Good Day New York on Tuesday that she had been released from an assisted living facility following a successful round of mental competency evaluations.
Earlier this year, Morrissey found himself embroiled in controversy as followers of Williams (aged 60) expressed their disapproval online over what they perceived as excessively stringent living conditions that Morrissey reportedly enforced for the television personality during her health struggle.
Supporters of the talk show host employed the hashtag “#FreeWendy”, mirroring previous actions taken during the conservatorship of popular singer Britney Spears, as a symbol of solidarity and advocacy for change.
During a conversation on The Breakfast Club in January, Williams openly shared that she had experienced emotional abuse and felt confined within a healthcare facility in New York City.
During the radio interview, Williams asserted that she was not experiencing any cognitive issues and alleged that Morrissey had taken her phone away, leaving her with just $15. Her relative, Alex Finnie, backed her up during the conversation.
Morrissey has been in charge of Williams’ custody, which she has been subject to since 2022. The Daily Mail contacted Morrissey on Monday to request his comments regarding the recent happenings concerning Williams.

Morrisey statement
Morrissey delivered a comprehensive statement to Dailymail.com’s legal department, expressing that the portrayal of the guardianship has been ‘inconsistent with reality, factually incorrect, inadequate, or potentially misleading.’
In simple terms, Morrissey stated that ‘in line with the usual procedure in New York, this particular guardianship case is being handled confidentially, as is common practice.’
The court has recently decided that false information spread through the media is detrimental to Ms. Williams’ interests and her guardianship.
Instead of what the report stated, it was clarified that ‘unlike some media outlets suggested, Ms. Morrissey, in her role as guardian, did not have the authority to legally declare Wendy Williams incapacitated’.
Contrary to numerous media claims, it was never within the authority of Ms. Morrissey, in her role as guardian, to officially declare Wendy Williams as legally incapacitated.
In simpler terms, the lawyers for Morrisey stated that it is exclusively the court’s responsibility to determine if an individual lacks legal capacity. This decision was made by the Supreme Court of New York County regarding Williams in August 2024, declaring her as ‘legally incapacitated.’
Sabrina is deeply committed to advocating for senior citizens, shielding them from fraud and mistreatment. Frequently, she represents them in the New York court system. Her work involves assisting them in securing necessary home support, protecting their financial resources, and creating strategies for their future well-being.

Morrisey background
On her website’s biography, it is stated that Morrissey’s main areas of expertise include estate management, administration, disputes, and legal matters concerning guardianships.
Previously, Morrissey served as the president of the New York Women’s Bar Association, sat on its Board of Directors, and acted as co-chair for the committees focusing on Elder Law and Disabilities, as well as Solo and Small Firms.
As a devoted follower, I’ve accrued priceless experience serving as General Counsel for a mid-sized international staffing firm. This role has equipped me with profound knowledge in company formation and operation. I’ve been instrumental in creating policies and procedures for global staff hiring and training, and have routinely advised the executive team on daily business decisions.
On February 22, 2024, it was revealed by her medical professionals that Williams had been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia accompanied by aphasia.
Previously, Williams’ team stated that she had received a diagnosis the year before, and that this condition posed substantial challenges for her to overcome.
As a lifestyle guide, I’m sharing an update about Wendy. Despite the challenges she faces, she remains remarkably independent in many aspects. What truly stands out, however, is her knack for keeping her characteristic wit and humor alive. Rest assured, she’s receiving the necessary care to ensure her safety, comfort, and all her needs are met diligently.
Morrissey stated that due to her health issues, the once popular daytime television personality is now experiencing cognitive decline, has become permanently disabled, and is unable to carry out normal tasks.

On Monday morning, around 11:15 a.m., Williams, a resident of an assisted living home, was transported to a healthcare facility after a routine health examination, according to information from law enforcement sources to the New York Post.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself compelled to share this intriguing tidbit: The venerable media icon, who currently resides in the memory wing of an establishment, reportedly scribbled a plea – ‘Help! Wendy!!’ – and hurled it from her fifth-floor room, as per the daily newspaper.
Later, it was noted that Williams was gesturing animatedly towards a journalist from The Post as she talked on the phone, according to the publication.
Williams, who’s challenging a guardianship granted by a New York City court, was subsequently spotted leaving with police assistance towards an ambulance.
On Monday, my scheduled health check-up happened to fall within a strategic timeline for me, as I was gearing up for a comeback in the public eye. You see, I had been lined up to make an appearance on the esteemed The View on ABC this Friday.
My doctor’s appointment on Monday coincided with my preparations for returning to the spotlight. I was set to appear on The View on ABC this coming Friday.
Getting a unique companion ready for her debut on ‘The View ABC’ this coming Friday… #FreeWendy – as posted by Suzanne Bass on Instagram, yesterday.
Bass has been vocal about his disapproval towards Morrissey’s guardianship, labeling it as ‘awful’ and ‘frightening’.
I am eagerly looking forward to my upcoming appearance on a daytime talk show next Friday, which will be my inaugural visit to such a platform since parting ways with my show, The Wendy Williams Show, back in 2021.
On Monday, it wasn’t immediately certain whether the appearance would go ahead, given Williams’ health concerns, or where it would take place – possibly in-person or online.
