Kylie Minogue referred to him as her “charming, rough-around-the-edges guy from Essex.” Being a male model typically doesn’t lead to widespread recognition, so dating one of the world’s top pop stars like Kylie should have been the ideal scenario for James Gooding.

Nevertheless, the former photographer, who is now 50 years old, confessed to infidelity during his tumultuous relationship with the singer. Later, he criticized her harshly as a ‘self-centered, nearly friendless control freak’ in a highly critical public statement.

He expressed concern about the singer, currently aged 56, potentially living a solitary life with just a pet cat as her companion. As a devoted admirer, I must admit that my perspective on the matter may not be entirely objective, given my prior admiration for Mr. Gooding, who once stood atop Britain’s modeling world. However, it’s undeniable that some of his remarks towards Kylie were rather severe. Yet, when we turn our gaze upon his own past, the judgments passed on him by others are equally critical, casting a less-than-flattering light on his character.

Martine McCutcheon described him as “cheap and revolting,” while another former partner, singer Victoria Harrison, labeled him a “miserable failure.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses slightly more contemporary language for a smoother read.)

A somewhat lenient woman fan confessed: ‘It’s hard to decide between giving him a kiss or a slap.’ These remarks appear to have been prescient when Sadie Frost, who followed the model after Kylie, was warned for assaulting him in October 2012.

Although she asserted that he had destroyed his life, the model proudly declared that he had been unfaithful to her with model Sophie Dahl following a trip to New York.

He had also been unfaithful with Davinia Taylor, former star of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

He’s had the good fortune of being in loving relationships with numerous beautiful women, yet Kylie stood out as exceptionally unique for him. Following our time together, Sophie, I was filled with such intense guilt that I immediately returned to London.

Despite his own behaviour, he claimed that the relationship had driven him to drink and drugs.

‘Her obsession with success completely did my head in.’

Following their separation and the incident at the Brit Awards, he conducted a vigil outside Kylie’s residence in Chelsea, which was later followed by a ten-day stay at the Farm Place Clinic in Surrey due to a drug overdose episode.

He had earlier expressed that rehab was both daunting and uplifting. He also suggested that if people took the time to reflect on themselves, the world could become a more harmonious place.

In a 2003 conversation with The Telegraph, he asserted he wasn’t an addict, but acknowledged the experience was beneficial.

He admitted: ‘It was good, it was scary, it was a real eye-opener for me.

‘I was feeling somewhat disorganized. Since my father had a severe drinking problem, I often wondered if I might be susceptible to the same path.’

Following his split from Kylie, James moved on with another high profile name – Sadie Frost.
