Inside the highs and lows of Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones’ very tumultuous long-standing friendship as they join The Voice lineup
As a longtime fan and observer of the music industry, I must admit that witnessing the camaraderie and longevity of bands like McFly is truly refreshing. Having followed their journey for nearly two decades, it’s evident that their friendship has been the driving force behind their success. It’s a rare sight indeed to see a band maintain such a strong bond after so many years together.
To many young admirers, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones were vital components of the cherished boy band McFly.
However, despite their successful run of songs during the early 2000s, the duo didn’t always have smooth sailing. Underlying friction ultimately culminated in the band’s disbandment in 2016.
Since McFly took a break, both Tom and Danny have spoken openly about the challenges the band faced, with Tom revealing that they sought help similar to marriage counseling before reuniting in 2019.
However, after their reunion, any backstage disagreements between McFly have long been resolved, leaving them to consistently entertain countless fans at concerts nationwide.
Tom and Danny are all ready to debut as dual coaches on The Voice UK starting August 31, joining forces with LeeAnn Rimes, Tom Jones, and will.i.am for the first time in the show’s history.
TopMob revisits the enduring bond between Tom and Danny, as they strive to discover the United Kingdom’s rising vocal talent.
Tom and Danny’s friendship dates back to a time when McFly hadn’t yet been established. They initially met during band auditions held in Manchester.
In an interview with BBC Radio 2 back in 2020, Danny mentioned that he was eager to become part of a freshly formed boy band, and it turned out that Tom was already a member therein.
Despite Danny’s unimpressive dancing skills, Tom proposed starting a band together instead. They embarked on their musical adventure by deciding to live under one roof.
He expressed that it was an enjoyable experience, the peak of being in a band. It was similar to students living together harmoniously, but it was primarily about making music, playing Xbox, ordering pizzas, drinking beer, and throwing parties. In short, it was a whirlwind of everything delightful.
In 2003, McFly’s career gained momentum with their first album titled “Room On The 3rd Floor”, and primarily, it was Tom who shouldered the responsibilities of songwriting.
On the other hand, Danny composed three personal tracks for each of the initial McFly albums, served as a producer, and even remixed several songs for additional projects. In addition to this, he performed throughout the country as a DJ during his spare time.
As a seasoned lifestyle aficionado, I have the distinct pleasure of sharing an intriguing tidbit about my past endeavors: I penned an extra track for One Direction’s second studio release and contributed to their heartwarming song “Don’t Forget Where You Belong” from their third album, Midnight Memories.
However, McFly didn’t always have an easy journey. Harry Judd, one of the band members, once shared that during their break, the relationships within the group were at their most strained, having reached a low point that was the worst they had experienced in the 13 years they had been together, when McFly disbanded in 2015.
In 2016, the team temporarily disbanded, a situation Tom had earlier expressed concerns about, fearing they might not reunite.
In an interview with The Sun, he shared his thoughts: “We may have tested it beyond its capacity. Often, we overlook those we care about the deepest. It’s simple to disregard problems and yes, it has proven to be quite a test.”
“For the past 17 years, we’ve experienced various stages and transformations, much like growing up side by side. Now, we’re entering a fresh chapter in our lives, one filled with children and extended families.”
Previously, McFly was the centerpiece of our world. However, as time passed, we came to understand that while it was incredibly significant, each of us also has our own individual pursuits.
Additionally, Tom compared the band’s connection to that of a marriage, pointing out that they required some time apart to preserve their friendship for the future.
He mentioned it was similar to being in a relationship akin to an affair, and admitted that navigating our way through it wasn’t straightforward.
In my personal journey, I sought guidance through couples counseling and observed other relationships temporarily. However, I am pleased to report that my spouse and I chose not to part ways in the end.
Additionally, he shared with Radio 2: “Naturally, there are highs and lows; it’s similar to any relationship because we’re four distinct individuals.”
Just as every profession encounters its highs and lows, what we didn’t anticipate was the strength that our friendship would provide throughout these challenges. It serves as the foundation upon which everything else is built.
It’s fortunate for us that we’ve managed to maintain a strong bond despite being in a band for 17 years. We aren’t just colleagues; we are true friends. Over the years, many bands have formed and dissolved, but our unique connection seems to be an exception rather than the norm. It’s this special relationship that we cherish and hold onto dearly.
While McFly holds a special place in our hearts and we cherish it deeply, what we truly crave now more than ever is strengthening our bonds with one another. The band’s continuity hinges on the solidarity among us, so let’s foster these relationships as our top priority.
Initially, McFly intended to get back together just for a performance at London’s O2 Arena. However, their plans expanded beyond that, leading to the creation of a new album and a tour across the entire country.
Earlier, Danny mentioned that without a break, the team might have faced exhaustion due to overwork.
In a light-hearted manner, he mentioned that their original plan was not to upset their significant others by staying away too long, as they had initially planned to come back after just one performance.
Tom and Danny are about to show up on “The Voice UK” as the initial pair to occupy two chairs simultaneously, aiming to discover the United Kingdom’s upcoming major music talent.
The duo declared, “Becoming the first-ever pair to use double chairs on The Voice UK will be an amazing experience, and we are both eager to take up this exciting challenge.”
Without a doubt, it’s an honor to associate with such exceptional talents as Emma, Will, Sir Tom, and LeAnn from our Voice family. Here’s to more brilliance!
It comes after judge of six years, Olly Murs, was unexpectedly axed from the show last year.
The lead vocalist of Dear Darling was informed by ITV executives that they were considering fresh talent for the coaching position, prior to him being removed from the show.
Murs shared his feelings about ITV, mentioning that he received word he wouldn’t return to the program, which came as quite a surprise to him. To put it simply, he wasn’t anticipating this turn of events.
I’m confident they’ll discover an excellent replacement, but I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness at the thought of not being there myself. I didn’t want to depart, and truthfully, I still plan on tuning in. However, it’s going to be bittersweet knowing that I could have been part of it all.
Meanwhile, Anne-Marie was also dropped from the series before the upcoming 2024 show.
