Inside Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal’s viral TV moment: From friendly hugs to tense remarks and THAT self-defense joke – what really happened to set the internet ablaze
As a woman who has spent a considerable amount of time navigating the complexities of the film industry, I find myself deeply moved by Saoirse Ronan‘s poignant comment during her recent interview. Her statement about gender-based violence resonates with me, not just as a fellow artist, but as a woman who has had to consider such dangers more often than I’d like.
Over a span of 16 years, The Graham Norton Show has consistently provided amusement for the masses, as its namesake presenter chats with countless celebrities in his iconic red armchairs.
On the other hand, it was during Friday night’s episode that the internet erupted, as Saoirse Ronan became a trending topic following her comments on gender-based violence, which she made in the company of an all-male panel.
30-year-old Irish actress, Saoirse, jokingly reacted to Paul Mescal’s jest involving Denzel Washington, Eddie Redmayne, and herself, regarding the absurdity of using a phone for self-defense in an attack scenario. The trio shared a laugh at this notion. However, promptly bringing the conversation back to reality, Saoirse subtly emphasized that women need to constantly consider their safety measures due to the threat of attacks.
Contrary to what some people thought after watching them, Saoirse and Paul actually have a strong friendship off-screen.
On last night’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, an intriguing conversation unfolded that placed Paul and Saoirse at its heart. I found myself eagerly listening as they shared engaging stories and insights, making them the focal point of the show.
The programme got off to a lively start as Eddie joked that Graham was pleased to have his ‘favourite line-up ever’.
I eagerly chimed in, remarking how Paul seemed to have a friendly rapport with all the folks on that couch, inquiring about his close bond with Saoirse.
In the midst of their animated tale-telling, Saoirse playfully quipped, “I’ll jump in, and then Paul responds, ‘just go ahead and say it!'”, revealing that she and my virtual buddy (Jack Lowden) forged an online bromance.
Paul mentioned that Jack had sent him a delightful message upon the release of ‘Normal People’, where he admired Jack so much that he became quite enthusiastic. Later on, Paul even got to collaborate with Saoirse, playing romantic partners, and they have since become good friends.
Saoirse promptly chimed in: “We live nearby, right here in Cork!” To which Graham playfully responded, teasing about their potential lack of time in Ireland if they kept hanging out together.
Paul and Denzel discussed Gladiator II on the program, following which they changed seats so that Paul could sit beside his friend Saoirse and offer her a warm embrace.
Yet it was clear Paul was in high spirits and just wanting to joke around when it came to Saoirse promoting her new film, Blitz, with Graham warning: ‘Paul behave, because Saoirse’s up now.’
Despite his warning, it seemed to fall on deaf ears, as Paul found himself struggling not to laugh when Saoirse was being interviewed later on.
The gentlemen on the stage were debating about undergoing body changes for acting parts, and shortly thereafter, the focus shifted towards Saoirse.
He asked about the training regime for her titular role in 2011 action thriller Hanna, where she plays a young girl raised to be an assassin by her ex-CIA operative father (Eric Bana).
In that moment, as an image of Saoirse from the movie appeared, the boys spontaneously erupted in giggles, causing the actress to caution them, “Please, no laughing.
Looking at the image, Paul kept laughing and said: “Check out that girl!” To which Saoirse responded: “That’s an iconic movie; she’s just taken down a deer.
Interrupting her, Paul laughed, ‘of course’, as Saoirse warned again, ‘stop laughing Paul…’
In an attempt to shift the conversation topic, Graham inquired of Paul, “By any chance, have you watched Hannah? It’s a fantastic movie!” To which the star of Normal People admitted that he had not.
When Saoirse was about to speak once more, Paul playfully inserted his comment: “I’d love to dress up as you for Halloween!” This remark seemed to annoy Saoirse noticeably, causing her to respond: “Alright, you’ve had enough talking now.
In a light-hearted moment, at the age of 69, Denzel playfully shrank back in his chair and joked, “I somehow knew to keep my distance!” while Saoirse playfully retorted, “No, no, no, we have nothing but love for each other.
The tense moment happened just minutes before Saoirse stunned the men into silence with her comment on gender-based violence.
In our conversation, Eddie, aged 42, shared that while preparing for his role in The Day of the Jackal, a forthcoming Peacock miniseries, he was taught techniques on using a phone as a means of counteraction should any attack occur.
Laughing heartily, Paul quipped, “‘Who would even consider such a thing in the heat of the moment? If someone were to attack me, I certainly wouldn’t reach for my phone.’
Laughing loudly, Graham pretended to shield himself with an imaginary phone against an attacker, asking, “Can I call you back in a moment?” To this, Eddie responded, “That’s indeed a clever idea.
In the course of the conversation, Saoirse eventually managed to voice her thoughts, stating: ‘It’s a constant concern for women.’
The brutally honest comment prompted a moment of silence from the panel.
She posed a question to everyone there, “Is what I’m saying correct?”, which was met with a thunderous applause from the audience in the studio.
Although Saoirse and Paul may have had an uncomfortable exchange during the program, they harbor no ill feelings towards each other.
Indeed, they developed a strong friendship off-screen as well following their co-starring role in the 2023 sci-fi movie “Foe,” portraying a married pair on screen.
During the promotional period for the movie, Saoirse revealed that the role helped strengthen their bond as they had only known each other casually prior, primarily through mutual friends.
Since working on the movie together, we’ve grown extremely close and are now genuine friends, not just those typical of Hollywood.
While speaking about his fellow actor, Paul remarked, “Saoirse is the most meticulously ready performer I’ve ever collaborated with. There’s no sign of fatigue in her work. She’s also become a great friend of mine now.
At present, Saoirse Ronan is actively publicizing her upcoming war drama movie titled “Blitz,” set for a theater release on November 1st. Subsequently, it will be streamed online via Apple TV+ starting from November 22nd.
In addition to the main cast, the film features Elliott Heffernan, Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clémentine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, and Stephen Graham.
The movie titled ‘Blitz,’ helmed by Steven McQueen, narrates the tales of various London residents amidst the bombings that struck London during World War II, as suggested by its tagline.
In the midst of turbulent times, Saoirse takes on the role of Rita, a mother nurturing her nine-year-old son George (Heffernan).
