Inside Salma Hayek’s 19-year close friendship with Nicole Kidman’s ex-husband Tom Cruise as actresses make headlines for clashing on the red carpet

As a seasoned observer of human behavior, I find myself drawn to analyze the intriguing encounter between Salma Hayek and Nicole Kidman at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week. My years of study have led me to believe that this awkward interaction was more about etiquette than any personal animosity.

Salma Hayek and Nicole Kidman have become a hot topic online following their apparent disagreement at the Balenciaga show during the recent Paris Fashion Week.

57-year-old Kidman and 58-year-old Hayek found themselves in a minor incident involving singer Katy Perry while posing for photographers. The disagreement seemed to have arisen when Hayek touched Kidman, who is Australian, during the request for a joint pose.

Notably, Tom Cruise, who was previously married to Nicole Kidman, has maintained a lasting friendship with the Mexican-born actor dating back nearly twenty years.

Cruise and Kidman were married for 11 years before announcing their shock divorce in 2001.

In my line of work as a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the dynamic duo, Hayek and Cruise, for quite some time now. Our paths first crossed when we collaborated on the set of Ask the Dust way back in 2005.

Although the actor and Hayek haven’t shared a screen before, the actor was part of the 2006 movie cast that also included Hayek, Colin Farrell, the late Donald Sutherland, and Idina Menzel.

The pair have since kept in contact and regularly attend lavish events and dinner parties together.

Back in February 2015, Cruise dined out with Penélope Cruz (who was then his girlfriend) and Hayek at the renowned Scott’s restaurant in London.

After departing from the well-known Mayfair establishment, Cruise was spotted with a lipstick mark on the right side of his face.

It wasn’t clear which actress, Cruz or Hayek, had kissed Tom, as they were both wearing bright red lipstick.

In July of 2022, these two companions were spotted taking pictures together outside a London eatery. They had just finished dining with François-Henri Pinault, who has been Hayek’s husband since 2009.

More recently, Hayek wished Cruise a happy 62nd birthday in July.

The actress paid tribute to the star as he celebrated the milestone.

She captioned an image of them on her Instagram Stories, showing the pair glammed at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party in April and wrote: ‘Happy birthday dear @tomcruise (three party popper-blowing emojis.)’

Hayek added the same message in Spanish, with it reading: ‘Feliz cumpleańos querido @tomcruise (three party popper-blowing emojis.)’

On Sunday, videos of the fashion week encounter between Kidman and Hayek started circulating online, causing quite a stir on various social media platforms.

However, amidst all the controversy surrounding Nicole Kidman’s supposed frosty demeanor, it appears that she was actually infuriated by the intrusive paparazzi.

After taking photos with Perry at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week, it was reported that the two women exchanged suggestions. However, Kidman eventually decided to leave after growing weary of persistent requests for additional interactions.

According to our source, there’s nothing to report here. The clip in question doesn’t accurately reflect the truth. Instead, there’s a picture showing them together. There was no incident or event that transpired.

They were engaged in a discussion centered around advice, holding a meeting, when they were constantly disturbed, harassed, and encircled by cameras. All they desired was to leave the chaotic scene.

‘They are friends and are fine despite what anyone thinks.’

They added: ‘Nicole is not rude. At all. She may be awkward at times, but she is not rude.’ 

In a seemingly contentious moment, Kidman and Hayek, both married to the fashion tycoon Pinault who owns Balenciaga, seemed to have disagreements when asked to pose alongside Perry, aged 39.

Actress Kidman, donning large black shades, seemed to brush aside Hayek’s hand for a photo opportunity, then proceeded to walk off. (Or) In large sunglasses, actress Kidman appeared to wave Hayek’s hand away for a picture before departing.

Two weeks past, a video of the event surfaced on Sunday evening, sparking a wave of comments and queries from fans towards Kidman on her Instagram, accusing her of questionable actions based on the footage.

Lip reading specialist Jeremy Freeman has interpreted the apparent disagreement as Hayek urging Kidman and Perry to “gaze, gaze” towards the cameras.

‘Let’s turn there, OK here,’ Hayek said to which Kidman replied: ‘Hey, I’m fine, I’m good.’

After kissing Perry on the cheek she added: ‘There, it’s enough, it’s OK.’

Later, Hayek gently touched Perry and reassured Kidman, saying ‘That’s okay, that’s okay’, followed by urging the Roar singer to ‘take a look, take a look’ towards the photographers.

In simpler terms, Judi James, a body language expert, offered her perspective on the incident involving the actresses. She referred to it as a “lesson from The Devil Wears Prada about subtle signs of social status.

Judi thinks the uncomfortable incident was due to a misunderstanding or breach of social norms rather than any prior connection between the actresses.

She mentioned to the Daily Mail that it seemed like Salma was subtly guiding Nicole in another direction without physically touching, with gestures that appeared to be slightly authoritative or superior in nature.

It seems like Nicole is pulling her hand back, implying that the gestured touch may have violated an unspoken rule, possibly indicating she wants control over when or where she moves.

She added: ‘Keeping your dignity and maintaining impeccable elegance while being jostled and made to wait for what can often be hours are necessary skills, and Nicole Kidman offers what looks like a masterclass here in protecting A-list parameters and status signals against all odds.’

Later on that evening, Hayek shared a series of pictures, among them was one captured of Kidman, who chose not to face the camera.

‘Finally last night the grand finale of my Paris Fashion Week 2025… Balenciaga and Demna for a terrific show,’ Hayek wrote.

Additionally, she tagged Kidman, who became Balenciaga’s ambassador last December, Perry, and Lohan. (or)

One fan posted: ‘Nicole was so rude to you, why take pictures with her?’

In a different wording: ‘Although Nicole treated you unkindly, you went ahead and shared a photo with her. This shows that there’s compassion within you.’

However, others chose to stand by Kidman during this difficult period following her mother’s passing, one individual remarking: “It’s unfair to criticize Nicole at a time like this…

At the recent gathering, this was Nicole Kidman’s initial public appearance following the passing of her mother, Janelle. On social media platform Instagram, Kidman and her sister Antonia paid an emotional tribute, while sharing a collection of previously unseen pictures of their deceased grandmother.

An insider commented: ‘Nicole is going through a difficult time following the passing of her mother. It’s unnecessary for others to fabricate anything; they’re friends, and ultimately, there’s no drama to report.’
