She was once firmly embedded in Hollywood’s A-list world.
Oh my god, Rose McGowan in the late 90s and early 2000s? She was everywhere! I mean, Scream and Jawbreaker were instant classics, and then she just totally owned the screen as Paige Matthews on Charmed – seriously, Charmed wouldn’t have been the same without her! She was a total star, leading those big movies and then totally dominating TV. I was obsessed!
She seemed like a constant presence on television and in magazines, regularly seen with famous people in Hollywood.
But that image quickly changed when she began speaking openly about abuse within the industry.
In 2017, Rose was among the first actresses to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault.
The former media executive was ultimately found guilty of four serious sex crimes in two different trials, one in New York and another in California.

When Rose publicly shared her experience, it caused a major stir in the industry and, she says, led to her being ostracized.
She once described Hollywood as operating like a mafia, but then realized she hadn’t been asked to be a part of it, which struck her as odd.
They automatically expected me to stay silent about what they did. People are scared to cross them, worried about the consequences. But I’m not one of those people.
Roles dried up, invitations stopped coming, and Hollywood quietly shut its doors.
Labeled as challenging and essentially excluded from work, Rose chose to start over with a new life in Mexico.
Rose recently explained that she left Hollywood because she found the environment harmful and felt she was being manipulated to generate negative publicity.
On a recent episode of Paul C. Brunson’s podcast, ‘We Need To Talk,’ she explained that she became aware she was being manipulated to create conflict between men and women in the media.
People often blame me for opposing changes I didn’t support, and I’ve always been clear about that. It’s just something that naturally happens when you stand against the tide.

I quickly left. My dad had lived on the west coast of Mexico for over 30 years, and I was just thinking about that.
‘So I’ve been going there since, you know, I was like 17.
I traveled to the jungle, specifically to a coastal area, and was beginning to consider a major life change when the Covid pandemic started. It made me realize I wanted something completely different in my life.
‘I didn’t want anything to do with Rose McGowan.
Although 2020 was a difficult year for many, it turned out to be the best year of my life.
It was perfect, honestly. I had everything I needed right there – the people I loved, my sweet little dog, and the most beautiful beach you could imagine. And the best part? It felt like our own little secret, because nobody else could even get there for ages. It was like the world just melted away, and it was just us.
‘I was actually safe.’
Last year, Rose shared that she spent time in the jungle, connecting with nature and taking a break to recharge after a very busy period.

She told the Hollywood Reporter that rediscovering her creativity helped her reconnect with her identity, but in a new and different way.
Rose shared an update about her time in Yucatán while speaking with her former co-star, Holly Marie Combs, during a panel discussion.
She described the country as incredible and truly special, highlighting its remarkable geographic and cultural diversity, and noting the abundance of joy found there, according to People magazine.
She shared that her favorite Spanish word is ‘alegría,’ meaning joy, and that the country embodies that feeling with its vibrant color, passion, and lively spirit.
The silver screen siren also described the Latin American country as ‘just different.’
In 2020, Rose shared on social media that she had moved to Mexico during the coronavirus pandemic.
She explained she was in Coba, on the Yucatan Peninsula. Knowing that Covid-19 was likely to become severe in the United States, she decided to choose a place she wanted to wait it out.
My lease ended in New York, so I moved to Mexico. The cost of living is much lower here – about a third of what I was paying – and it’s a beautiful place to live.
She announced a year after moving that she had officially become a permanent resident of Mexico.

She recently shared on The Dab Roast that she received her permanent residency card from Mexico and expressed her gratitude.
‘This is a really healing land here and it is truly magical.’
Okay, so Rose left Hollywood, which honestly, good for her! But it’s not like she just disappeared. She’s still fighting the good fight with her activism, but get this – she’s become a musician now! I’m seriously obsessed with this new chapter of hers. It’s amazing!
In 2020, she shared on her website that as a child facing difficulties, she invented a perfect world in her imagination, which she called Planet 9.
I felt secure and at peace on the world I created. I often thought about what kinds of sounds might be found there.
Rose explained that she’d completely forgotten about the imaginary planet she created until astronomers discovered a new one and called it Planet 9.
With that, she launched her debut album, Planet 9, in April 2020.
Before choosing to leave her career as a celebrity, Rose publicly accused Harvey of rape, becoming a well-known figure in the #MeToo movement.

Harvey Weinstein was once a powerful figure in Hollywood, but in 2017, media reports detailing accusations of sexual misconduct turned him into a symbol of the issue.
Around sixty women shared disturbing stories about the producer, and he was found guilty of multiple sex offenses in New York and California.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Harvey’s case closely. He began a 16-year prison sentence back in 2018, and unfortunately, he faced another conviction in a New York retrial this June, in 2025.
Reflecting on her career, the actress explained at the 90s Con that she spent a significant amount of time speaking publicly – more than most people would.
She realized she’d reached a point where she was completely drained from talking and simply needed to be quiet. ‘I just wanted to listen,’ she explained, ‘I craved silence and wanted to focus on hearing others rather than speaking myself.’
The actress acknowledged that her move hasn’t been all smooth sailing.
She acknowledged that living there had its difficulties, like any new place, and that it could be tough getting things done when you weren’t yet fluent in the language.
‘You’re navigating a totally different system. You learn very quickly, though,’ she noted.
In June 2021, Rose shared on Instagram that she had been struggling with difficult times, including depression.
Depression can be incredibly difficult. As I discuss in my book, I’m open about my experiences with depression, trauma, and PTSD.
You know, I’ve realized when I talk about the past, it’s like I’m desperately trying to escape it. It’s as if revisiting those memories casts a shadow, not just on my life, but on the lives of everyone connected to those stories. It’s a heavy thing, this weight of history, and sometimes I just wish it would all fade away.
‘But what I know is that there will be light again.

Eventually, the pain will fade, and we’ll look forward to brighter days.
Since moving to Mexico, things are looking brighter for Rose. She’s been on a journey to discover who she truly is and create a more peaceful and gentle life for herself.
She’s currently busy with several projects: a new music single, an acting role filming in Paris, and voiceover work for a short film called “Any Moment Now,” directed by Baby Yors.
Rose recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter that prioritizing personal growth and happiness is her focus. She believes the most powerful thing someone can do right now is to step back from the pressures and competition of everyday life.
‘I don’t want to have my head spinning every other minute with this or with that, I’ve done that.
Over time, what truly matters becomes clear, and you gain perspective on what you’re capable of, what you can improve, and what you need to accept.
