As a long-time movie enthusiast and someone who closely follows the box office trends, this past weekend was a rollercoaster ride of excitement and disappointment. “Inside Out 2” continued its dominance with an impressive third-place finish and a new milestone of crossing the $1-billion mark. I’ve always had a soft spot for Pixar films, and watching Amy Poehler’s heartfelt portrayal of Riley once again brought joy to my cinema experience.
Over the weekend, the unpredictable trend at the box office was on full display. In its third week of release, “Inside Out 2” earned an impressive $57.4 million and claimed the top spot once again. On the other hand, “A Quiet Place: Day One” surprised everyone by debuting strongly with sales of $53 million.
The main topic of discussion is expected to be the underperforming third place finish of “Horizon: An America Saga — Chapter 1” with earnings of $11 million. This production, which stars and is directed by Kevin Costner, co-writes the script, and produces it, is a three-hour western set during the Civil War era. It’s the first installment in a planned series of four films, with “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” scheduled for release on Aug. 16.
After dedicating several decades to the “Horizon” project, Costner is said to have personally invested a significant amount, approximately $38 million, into the film. Simultaneously, he chose to leave behind the hugely successful TV show “Yellowstone,” created by Taylor Sheridan. In the past, Costner took a gamble on himself when he put his own funds into “Dances With Wolves” in 1990. This investment paid off handsomely as the film grossed over $400 million worldwide and received seven Academy Awards including best picture and director.

Warner Brothers is charging a fee for distributing the movie, with Costner and his investors handling marketing expenses. Prior to the weekend release, industry experts projected an opening U.S. and Canadian box office revenue between $10 million and $12 million. The filmmakers and studio are optimistic that Costner’s devoted fan base of heartland residents and elderly cinema-goers will attend in larger numbers as time passes.
As a longtime fan of animated films, I’m always excited to witness cinematic milestones that leave a lasting impact on audiences. Last weekend, I was thrilled to learn that “Inside Out 2” from Disney and Pixar surpassed the $1-billion mark at the box office, making it the first animated film since last year’s “Barbie” to reach this impressive milestone.
Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place: Day One” is predicted to earn between $40 and $50 million during its opening weekend. However, this projection was surpassed as the film reportedly brought in an impressive estimated opening revenue of $53 million – a new record for the franchise’s three movies.

Michael Sarnoski, also the film’s director and co-writer with John Krasinski, who is the franchise’s originator, introduces Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in “Day One”. Both actors are making their debuts in this series.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In the past week, the fourth installment of “Bad Boys,” titled “Ride or Die” and helmed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for Sony Pictures, brought in an impressive $10.3 million at the box office. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star in this action-packed sequel.
Over the weekend, “Kalki 2898 AD,” a movie from India, rounded off the top five earners at the box office, bringing in approximately $5.4 million under the guidance of director Nag Ashwin.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming weeks are packed with exciting new releases that are sure to give the box office a much-needed boost after a disappointing summer. Get ready for “Despicable Me 4,” “MaXXXine,” “Twisters,” and the long-awaited team-up of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” These movies are poised to bring audiences back to theaters and revitalize our beloved film industry!
