Inside John Krasinski’s transformation from The Office geek to action hero hunk as he’s named 2024’s Sexiest Man Alive (and his wife’s hilarious reaction!)
As I delve into the captivating world of People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, I find myself awestruck by the diversity and charisma that each recipient brings to the table. Each man, with his unique life experiences and achievements, has carved out a niche for himself in Hollywood and beyond.
He soared to fame in the Noughties playing the loveable nerd Jim Halpert in NBC’s The Office.
Two decades after his debut performance, John Krasinski has moved beyond his intellectual office persona and morphed into a rugged action star.
His ripped new look has seen him switch from starring in genteel romcoms like License to Wed to fronting action thrillers like Amazon Prime series Jack Ryan.
After an incredible physical change, he was announced as People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2024, during an episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that aired on Tuesday.
So how did the handsome actor – who has admitted he ‘hates’ workouts – go from geek to Greek god?
In 2005, John Krasinski’s character resembling the neighbor boy aided him in securing his role as an unassuming, academically lacking office employee harboring affection for the receptionist, similar to the part portrayed by Martin Freeman in the UK version of The Office. This characterization helped him land the role.
For eight years, it was the part he took on, and he confessed that the following months after the mockumentary ended felt quite unusual or strange to him.
Krasinski shared that it’s tough not just to abandon a series and a character he cherished so much, but personally, it feels like a lost period in his life. He landed the role when he was 23 years old.
In the year 2008, I stepped into the spotlight with an entirely new facet of myself, taking part in the cinematic journey titled Leatherheads, which was directed by none other than George Clooney. This production, a delightful period comedy, offered a captivating glimpse into the early days of American professional football, where I had the pleasure of sharing the screen with the radiant Renée Zellweger.
He played Carter ‘the Bullet’ Rutherford, Princeton University’s college football star and a decorated hero of the First World War.
Krasinski garnered acclaim for his acting, being characterized as an actor with the ability to convey both endearing youthfulness and thoughtful seriousness.
He auditioned to play Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger but he ultimately lost out to Chris Evans.
As a devoted admirer, I can confidently share that I went beyond my usual limits when I conducted a script reading in costume. However, the moment Chris Hemsworth appeared in his Thor attire, it dawned on me just how out of my league I was.
Instead, he chose to build up his physique to portray a former U.S. Navy SEAL in the 2016 movie “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.” In this role, he was responsible for protecting an American diplomatic post in Libya during a series of terrorist assaults.
Considering his missed opportunity for a Marvel role, Krasinski shared with Men’s Health: ‘A figure in the Marvel universe or leading-man circle told me, “Hollywood won’t believe you’re capable until they see it. Once they do, that image can’t be erased from their minds.” That’s exactly what transpired for me.’
When I took on the role of Captain America, some folks were skeptical, saying “Really?” However, after my performance in 13 Hours, they seemed more convinced, responding with “Okay, yeah, you’re capable of these kinds of roles now.
I ask, “Aren’t you concerned with the acting or is it only the appearance that matters to you?” To which they reply, “Yes, that’s accurate.
He admitted becoming addicted to working out while getting in shape for 13 Hours.
It changed his outlook permanently, with Krasinski revealing he maintains his figure by staying within ‘three weeks’ of his peak ripped physique.
He explained: ‘I remember my trainer saying, “Try to stay within three weeks, so that whatever part you get, within three weeks we can get you down,” he said. ‘That’s the goal, to be able to shift back and forth.
‘I think that’s better than saying, “Stay ripped your whole life.” Because that’s really annoying, and the people who do it really easily annoy me,’ he added. ‘Yes, I’m talking to you, Chris Hemsworth.’
In 2018, Krasinski landed another action role that kept him in shape.
In the main series, he portrayed CIA analyst Jack Ryan, a character who was unexpectedly thrust out of his office routine into real-world action.
In addition, Krasinski has acted alongside his spouse Emily Blunt in the horror movie series that he himself directs, titled A Quiet Place.
Despite witnessing her husband’s physical transformation during their playtime, Blunt found it amusing when Krasinski was titled the Sexiest Man Alive.
In an appearance on The Late Show, he revealed that only his wife Emily and Matt Damon were aware of his victory.
He remarked: ‘I don’t typically start my day contemplating if today will be the day I’m named Sexiest Man Alive, but that’s exactly what happened. You all truly set a new standard for me.’
Additionally, he couldn’t help but praise his spouse, expressing: ‘There’s a wonderful aspect of marriage where you’re continually discovering, adapting, and growing. I feel incredibly fortunate to experience this journey with her.’
The actor humorously commented that his new title wouldn’t assist him at home but instead would result in him having to take on ‘even more domestic tasks’, which could be rephrased as: “He might say, ‘Well, with this new role comes greater responsibilities around the house.’
45-year-old charmer took over the prestigious title previously held by Patrick Dempsey, who was crowned in 2023 as the heartthrob of Grey’s Anatomy, at the age of 58.
Krasinski told People he thought he was ‘being punked’ when he was told he won the title this year.
Apart from sharing that the title, “Sexiest Man Alive,” made his 41-year-old spouse extremely thrilled, he also mentioned there was an abundance of happiness when he disclosed the news to her.
After Krasinski was announced as this year’s winner, fans had a divided reaction on social media.
John Krasinski named Sexiest Man Alive? That’s a bit surprising to me.” or “I find it hard to believe that John Krasinski is People’s Sexiest Man Alive.” or “I can’t help but feel let down. I thought for sure Ryan Gosling would take the title this year.
A different observer posted a picture of John’s wife, Emily, visibly emotional in a scene from The Devil Wears Prada movie, and captioned it, ‘apparently only she sees it like this.’
To me, this feels far more frustrating than working with Benny Blanco – it’s as if I’m trying to teach something new to a loaf of bread. In simpler terms, we seem to be stuck in the most challenging scenario imaginable.
However, others had more positive reactions. ‘Oh come be nice, I think he’s sexy.. maybe not sexiest.. but he is smart and funny.’
Krasinski and Colbert recorded an amusing 1980s-style tutorial video aimed at teaching the talk show host how to transform from a quirky, charming neighbor type into a muscular, dim-witted heartthrob.
As a devoted follower, I’ll share with you the six key actions Krasinski outlined. Among these steps are avoiding unhealthy treats, consuming uncooked eggs, and obtaining a DNA sample (with Chris Evans’ consent, of course) who once held the title of Sexiest Man Alive.
Evans hilariously made a cameo in the clip, with Colbert surprising him with a cheek swab.
John Krasinski is particularly recognized for portraying the character Jim Halpert in the widely acclaimed television show The Office, airing from 2005 to 2013.
Additionally, he is well-known for appearing in the film “13 Hours” (2016), directed by Michael Bay, as well as the Amazon Prime Video series “Jack Ryan,” which aired from 2018 to 2023.
Lately, he has been gaining recognition in the directorial field through his work on the horror movies A Quiet Place (2018), A Quiet Place Part II (2020), and IF (2024).
Since the year 2010, he has been in a marital relationship with Blunt. They are proud parents of two girls: ten-year-old Hazel and seven-year-old Violet.
Previously, Colbert awarded the title – selected considering factors like physical charm, personality, and cultural influence – to Paul Rudd in 2021, following a series of amusing assessments for being an attractive man.
The crown was then handed off to Captain America star Chris Evans, 43.
Another hunk featured in this year’s issue was Selena Gomez’s boyfriend Benny Blanco.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m delighted to share some of the insights I gleaned from my chat with the Grammy-nominated producer, who, at 36, exudes an infectious zest for life and love. In this enlightening conversation, he revealed his formula for success in both personal and romantic spheres, and even offered a sneak peek into his charming morning rituals with the actress, a captivating 32-year-old beauty.
After it was revealed that he would be part of the issue, fans had a mixed response.

1994 saw no announcement for a “Winner of the Year,” but the dynamic duo, Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, were crowned as the “Sexiest Couple Alive” in 1993.
During the initial ten years of this yearly accolade, which spanned the 1980s, Sean Connery was named Sexiest Man Alive posthumously in 1989, followed by John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1988, Harry Hamlin in 1987, and Mark Harmon in 1986.
In February 1985, People Magazine bestowed the title of Sexiest Man Alive upon Mel Gibson, who was only 29 years old at the time.
