Inside Hailey Merkt’s harrowing battle with cancer: The Bachelor star documented her final months online before her death aged 31
As I pore over these heart-wrenching words, my heart is heavy with empathy and admiration for Hailey. Her journey through cancer has been one of immense strength, resilience, and grace that leaves me in awe. She has faced adversity with an unwavering spirit, demonstrating the true power of human will.
Actress Hailey Merkt, famously known from “Late Bachelor,” publicly detailed her tumultuous journey with cancer on the internet, providing updates about her treatment procedures and ultimately announcing a few months prior to her passing that she had achieved remission.
On Tuesday evening, Hailey’s family shared the sad news on Instagram that she had lost her battle with leukemia at the age of 31. After a long and difficult struggle, she is no longer with us.
In my personal journey, as a participant in Season 21 of The Bachelor vying for Nick Viall’s affection, I was unflinchingly truthful about the excruciating signs I experienced due to the illness that ultimately claimed my life.
Frequently, she openly shared about the severe downsides of her life on Instagram, detailing challenges such as losing appetite because of nausea, barely having the energy to take a shower due to exhaustion, and shivering from numerous injections.
However, the beloved TV figure equally showcased the exceptional moments during her treatments, such as enjoying a sunset from her hospital window and indulging in any food since she no longer fretted over dieting.
In October 2023, Hailey initially disclosed her leukemia diagnosis by sharing a video on her Instagram Stories where she was balding her hair.
At the time, she said that she had already tried chemotherapy and that it ‘didn’t work.’
She mentioned that as she prepared to undergo another kind of therapy, there was a “fairly high probability” she might not survive.
She expressed apprehension about sharing it, but felt it was necessary to inform many concerned individuals about my current situation, which she posted at the time.
I’ve walked a long and arduous road, battling against the relentless adversary known as leukemia. The journey has been filled with countless treatments, each promising hope, only to be dashed by the cold reality that chemo didn’t work for me. Now, facing my mortality, I find myself at a crossroads, with one more treatment option left – a method that is less effective and uncertain. Each day brings new challenges, but my spirit remains unbroken as I hold onto the memories of the life I’ve lived and the love that surrounds me. Despite the odds, I refuse to let this disease define me; instead, I continue to fight with every ounce of strength I possess, seeking solace in the hope that there is still a chance for a brighter tomorrow.
‘Should I not reply promptly to your DM, understand that I might be feeling exhausted and low on energy. However, please be assured this does not mean I don’t value your message or our connection.’
One week later, she revealed that she had officially started the new treatment.
She posted a selfie from her hospital bed, which she captioned, ‘Starting my last chance.’
Looking back on her experience, Hailey posted an old photo from when she began chemotherapy with her mom and sister on August 27.
‘I kept it private thinking I would be able to easily beat this,’ she recalled.
Around the end of November, Hailey announced some thrilling news: the treatment was effective, and she had achieved remission.
‘There was a two per cent chance of this treatment working and it f**king did,’ she gushed.
I have walked a long and difficult path, filled with challenges and obstacles that seemed insurmountable at times. But through it all, I found hope, strength, and resilience. Today, I am proud to say that I am in remission, a testament to the power of positivity, love, and support from my community. To everyone who prayed for me, thought of me, sent positive energy my way, or offered words of encouragement during my journey, I cannot thank you enough. Your kindness and compassion helped me through some of my darkest moments, and I will forever be grateful for your unwavering support. Together, we have proven that love conquers all, and I am a living testament to that truth.
I’m convinced that everyone’s energy played a crucial role in making this miracle happen. It undeniably filled me with optimism.
However, she still had a ways to go on her journey to full recovery, as she mentioned needing another round of treatment and a subsequent stem cell transplant, which was planned post-Christmas.
She mentioned that she would require approximately a year to recover following the procedure. Regardless, I feel fortunate to embark on this journey, and I consider myself one of the lucky few, as I am currently among the 2%.
A few days passed, and she posted a video of herself commencing her last treatment; at 31 years old, she tightly held onto a friend’s hand while he assisted in shielding her eyes.
A nurse was seen injecting her stomach with a needle while Hailey’s hand trembled in fear.
She posted, “Three months ago today, I received the news about my cancer. Today signifies the beginning of my final round of treatment before my transplant later this month, which aims to maintain remission.”
As an ardent enthusiast, I find myself standing at a crossroads, brimming with daunting challenges ahead. Yet, the unwavering faith within me swells, knowing that with every bit of compassion and support that pours in from all corners, I can triumph. I am not alone in this journey, for my immediate circle stands resolute by my side. Together, we shall conquer!
I deeply value each one of you, and I’ll keep on updating you about every significant event (positive or negative) that comes my way. You are all deeply cherished.
Later on, she shared a picture which revealed her abdomen marked with a series of bruises. Accompanying the image was a needle emoji in the caption.
In the midst of her cancer fight, Hailey made every effort to maintain a positive outlook. A few days later, she shared a list of things that brought her joy – among them were indulging in whatever food she desired and being free from concerns about blackheads or pimples.
In her own words, she expressed that certain thoughts bring her peace… She battles for life itself, rather than wrestling with cancer.
‘I’m pretending statistics don’t matter. Some people get to be in the two per cent.
‘I’ve never been closer with my family. I have hit new depths with many of my friendships.
‘I get to eat whatever I want because gaining weight is a goal for me through chemo.
‘My skin has never been better because I have no natural oils, meaning no blackheads or zits.
“Since I’ve always loved wearing hats during winter, this new reason gives me an opportunity to shop for some stylish and high-quality ones.”
Come January, I found myself on the brink of a life-altering event – a stem cell transplant. Remarkably, my beloved sibling stepped up, offering the gift of life itself by donating his own stem cells to me.
She expressed her gratitude for your unselfishness, calling you a true hero. Her love for you reaches far beyond Earth; it extends as far as the moon and back. Here’s hoping our plans succeed.
Following the completion of the procedure, Hailey experienced intense stomach issues which made it difficult for her to consume food. Consequently, she stated that she had lost approximately 25 pounds and found it challenging to walk even a short distance.
“It’s been some time since I last shared about my health status. Since my transplant, there have been a few close calls that I wanted to mention.” (Shared in January as part of her Instagram Stories update)
In simpler terms, the largest one among us is currently not eating due to some issue. I’ve been attempting to persevere, but as a result, I’ve shed approximately 25 pounds.
“For some time, I’ve been unable to keep up with updates because I wasn’t sure about what was happening with my health, and when I left the hospital, I had difficulty walking.”
She shared that medical professionals would insert a camera into her abdomen in an attempt to understand the situation, and she anticipated the process to be extremely uncomfortable.
If I have to stay indoors instead of going out due to harmful fungi in the air, all I do is watch TV from my bed right now.
I’ve had my fair share of health struggles, and even a simple act like sitting on a park bench can send me into a spiral of sickness. It means the world to me when people take the time to check in and keep me in their thoughts. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming and I’m truly grateful for each and every one of you.
Towards the end of March, Hailey posted a fresh update and disclosed that no illness was discovered within her abdomen.
As a lifestyle expert, I can share my personal experience: I was prescribed a potent steroid regimen which significantly improved my condition during the course of treatment. However, now that I’ve finished the treatment, I find myself under the weather once more, highlighting the importance of ongoing care and maintenance for optimal wellness.
She mentioned that she had been without the steroid for two days, and her energy levels have noticeably decreased since it was providing her with artificial energy. However, she’s been able to eat regularly, and she’s gradually putting on weight now.
Previously famous television personality mentioned that she was preparing for a bone marrow test, aiming to find out if she is no longer battling cancer.
She was also going to get a series of tests to see how her organs were functioning.
She mentioned that her upcoming week is booked with eight initial consultations, aiming to gauge her current health status.
In the upcoming fortnight, I’ll learn if I’m cancer-free. Yet, I feel apprehensive about celebrating, even if that’s the case.
Based on my personal journey with cancer, I am all too aware that my specific type of cancer has a tendency to recur. However, I refuse to let this disease dictate the course of my life as I work towards regaining my health. It’s a mental challenge I must conquer, pushing through fear and uncertainty, to ensure that cancer doesn’t remain in control while I focus on healing.
But she did have some ‘exciting news’ to share – the stem cell transplant had been successful.
’99 per cent of the working cells in my body are currently my brother’s healthy cells,’ she shared.
Transplanting cells into a new body often brings along several complications, with organ failure being the most frequent one.
99% is about as good as it gets for me; once more, I find myself incredibly fortunate. Overwhelmed by gratitude, it feels like I’ve been blessed with not one, but two miracles.
After that point, Hailey stopped sharing updates, but she posted a rather cryptic message towards the end of April instead.
She contemplated on several lessons gleaned from her cancer fight, among them not underestimating the importance of spending quality time with her dear ones and cherishing her physical being.
‘Things I’ve learned over the last seven months: You can be strong and vulnerable at the same time,’ she said.
Instead of dwelling on the belief that your life achievements aren’t sufficient, understand that they are. Make it a point to express your love to those dear to you frequently.
Showing genuine selflessness is an extraordinary present you can offer to someone; I owe my life to it right now.
‘Your body is an incredible machine. Thank it everyday for keeping you alive.
Life can sometimes feel unjust, but we must learn to adapt. If you’re struggling mentally or physically, remember to take care of yourself. Even the simple act of having a shower can be a significant achievement.
On Tuesday evening, it was announced on Instagram by Hailey’s family members that she had sadly passed away following a valiant battle against illness.
‘Hailey approached this journey with an extraordinary level of resilience, elegance, and altruism,’ the sentence went on.
Her spirit and resilience outshone all medical predictions about her time left, and she opted to spend her last moments among treasured companions, engaging in activities she adored without any lingering remorse.
After her unfortunate demise, an addition was made to her GoFundMe page stating that despite initially overcoming the disease, there occurred a heartbreaking turn of events in her health.
Following the successful bone marrow transplant, she was reassured she had approximately nine peaceful months free from cancer concerns. However, unbeknownst to her, her leukemia cells returned just six weeks later and started rapidly multiplying, which eventually led to the distressing news of their return.
Her initial response was, “I no longer prioritize myself, but it breaks my heart to be the source of such distress for those dear to me.”
The GoFundMe page shared that she determinedly chose to make each moment count, cherishing time with her beloved ones and engaging in activities she adored. She found joy in a multitude of small pleasures.
