Inside Brad Pitt and George Clooney's Hollywood bromance: From bitterness over iconic role to 'fallout' amid marriage to Angelina Jolie - as long-running pals reunite for new movie

As someone who has spent decades in the ever-spinning world of celebrity gossip, I must say that the saga of George Clooney’s wedding and the alleged rift between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is a fascinating tale. While it’s always intriguing to dissect the lives of the rich and famous, it seems that human emotions often play a significant role in these stories.

After a gap of 24 years since their first joint screen appearance in the blockbuster Ocean’s Eleven in 2001, Brad Pitt and George Clooney have teamed up once more for the new movie titled Wolfs.

Brad, who is 60 years old, and George, who is 63, have enjoyed a lengthy, high-profile friendship in the world of Hollywood, starting off as TV actors and eventually rising to become Academy Award-winning leading men.

Yet, despite both contending for a legendary role that catapulted one into widespread recognition, the other’s identity remained obscure for quite some time.

After an alleged strain, their friendship between Brad, Angelina Jolie, and George Clooney appeared to lessen following the incident when Brad and Angelina did not attend George’s 2014 wedding to Amal Alamuddin, possibly due to feelings of being ‘snubbed’ by the bride.

Here TopMob takes a look inside the duo’s friendship…..

Wresting for a role

It’s thought that these two close friends first encountered each other in 1991, during their auditions for the part of JD in the movie Thelma & Louise.

George Clooney admitted that he found it difficult to watch the timeless 1991 drama, as he had lost the opportunity to play cowboy J.D to Brad Pitt in the casting process.

In an interview with GQ, he mentioned that although Brad’s acting career skyrocketed following his role in the movie with Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, he found himself continuing to work in television instead.

Telling the publication: ‘I wouldn’t watch Thelma & Louise for a couple of years.’

In about three more years, Clooney secured the lead role as Dr. Doug Ross in the medical drama ER.

In the meantime, Pitt expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards director Ridley Scott and actress Geena Davis, stating that they had given him an opportunity by casting him in the part.

He shared with The Sun: “I hadn’t achieved much personally, beyond acting as an extra, but they decided to give me a chance.”

Despite being grateful for his groundbreaking part, Pitt openly confessed that he can’t avoid feeling awkward about the falsetto he used for the character.

The two-time Academy Award winner playfully remarked, “I seem to have noticed that my voice is quite high in this instance. I guess I was so tense, being the first one, it feels like my nerves were as taut as a bowstring.”

Pitt thinks that the makers of the 1991 movie were quite eager, or even under pressure, to cast that role because of its demanding shooting schedule.

To put it plainly, they seemed quite desperate, as I later found out. In fact, by the following week, they had already started firing weapons, and I was already at work on the film set.

As I prepared for my ultimate screen test for Thelma & Louise, I found myself squaring off against no less than five other talented performers, among them the dashing George Clooney.

According to Brad, it was his co-star Davis that plucked him out from the bunch.

‘The blond one . . . hello!’ she gushed at the time.

Close Bond

The pair share a strong connection, as Clooney recently shared with GQ that they occasionally keep tabs on each other, a significant aspect of friendship given the complexities life sometimes presents.

In the meantime, Pitt mentioned that his friend excels at comprehending situations. He revealed that he often reaches out to him during difficult times when things become turbulent.

Going on to say they have ‘been through so much life at this point and so many twists and curves and turns. I know he’s got my back. I got his back.’

Healthy competition

Over the course of several years, these two actors have starred in a total of seven movies together. They openly acknowledge that they enjoy the competitive aspect of their friendship, whether it be on set or off.

According to Pitt, if he hadn’t had someone like George Clooney in his life, he isn’t sure he would have achieved some of the heights he did, as this relationship motivates him to keep striving.

As a die-hard admirer, I couldn’t help but echo his words: “I yearn to outshine you in every task, yet if fortune doesn’t smile upon me, I sincerely hope it finds you instead.”

Friendship ‘cooling off’

In 2014, when Pitt didn’t attend George’s grand Venetian wedding to Amal Alamuddin, although they were quite near in Malta, gossip began that their close friendship had ended.

Previously, Pitt was rumored to serve as his long-standing acting partner’s best man, which makes his absence all the more puzzling.

It was also whispered that Brad Pitt’s ex-wife, actress Angelina Jolie, supposedly had a dislike towards Amal and considered her as a potential competitor in some way.

Despite no official confirmation, it appears there may have been some strain in their relationship, as the visible friendship between Brad and George has become less prominent over the past decade.

After going through a high-profile, contentious divorce, it seems that George and Brad, formerly known as Brangelina, have managed to rekindle their old friendship again.

Brad even staged the GQ photoshoot with George at Château Miraval in Correns – the French winery at the centre of his three-year long legal battle with Angelina – perhaps in a subtle dig at his ex-wife.

Pitt and Jolie, both aged 49, have found themselves in a disagreement concerning their shared ownership of a charming vineyard in France. They bought the property during their happy marriage in 2008. Recently, Pitt has filed a lawsuit against his former spouse for selling her share to Russian businessman Yuri Shefler without his knowledge, reportedly for $62 million, in October 2021.

As a die-hard fan eagerly awaiting the upcoming nuptials, let me share an intriguing tidbit I’ve learned: Starla Clooney, the star’s aunt, hinted to TopMob that Brad might be the top contender for best man. Interestingly enough, it seems George is leaning towards selecting one of his acting buddies instead of a relative for the role.

She mentioned that if she had to guess, it would be Brad Pitt whom he’d select as his best man. Given their friendship, that seems like a likely choice to her.

However, it was Rande Gerber, his spouse Cindy Crawford’s partner and co-creator of the renowned tequila brand Casamigos, who served as George Clooney’s best man during their extravagant wedding in Venice.

1. People were taken aback by what seemed like a slight at the wedding, and they were even more surprised when they found out that Brad had not shown up for his supposed closest friend’s wedding ceremony at all.

It eventually came to light that Brad’s schedule for filming The Sea coincided with his wedding date, as he was working with his wife Angelina Jolie on the project at the time. Interestingly, they were both in Malta around the same period, but their schedules conflicted.

After speaking with Access Hollywood later, it appeared that Brad adopted a laid-back approach regarding missing his friend’s major event, stating that he hadn’t yet purchased a present for the occasion: ‘We were working in Malta at the time. [Had I sent a gift?] I still owe him something.’

It was widely thought that the underlying cause was the strained relationship between Brad’s longtime companion, Angelina, and George’s recent spouse.

Angelina and Amal seemed like obvious friends with a shared interest in human rights.

However, sources shared with The Sun that a strong sense of competition existed between the two women, surprisingly so given the camaraderie shared by their spouses.

2018 sources suggest that Angelina allegedly felt intense jealously towards Amal, with friends claiming to PageSix that Angelina perceived Amal as having usurped her identity as the globe’s most captivating humanitarian, leading Angelina to believe Amal had supplanted her in this role.

According to a source, Angelina finds herself displeased with the spotlight Amal is receiving. After all, Amal is not only stunningly beautiful but also intelligent, fashionable, boasts a lovely family, and contributes significantly to human rights causes.
