Inside Bar Selecta, the 10-Seat Listening Bar Where Sake Meets Soul

Summary

  • Bar Selecta is a 10-seat Japanese-inspired listening bar in Hawthorn, created by six Melbourne hospitality veterans, blending curated vinyl, mid-century design and intimate energy
  • The venue pairs vintage jazz, funk and pop records with playful cocktails and premium sake, offering a moody lounge, laneway terrace and upcoming BYO vinyl sessions

Bar Selecta in Melbourne, nestled on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, doesn’t make a loud noise; instead, it radiates a harmonious hum. This cozy 10-seat establishment is the brainchild of six seasoned hospitality professionals: Joey Tai (formerly of Flower Drum), Masaki Hisaike (a sake expert), Kelvin Low (The Elysian), Adam Ong (Golden Monkey), and Michael and Eleena Tan (Brand Works).

The idea is inspired by the cozy vinyl bars of Japan, where music dominates the atmosphere. You’ll find 1950s jazz records, uncommon Japanese funk, and tunes from artists like Lana Del Rey to De La Soul spinning on vintage JBL speakers in a setting characterized by red onyx, orange glass bricks, and mid-century modern simplicity.

Beyond the red onyx marble counter, beverages vibrate with energy from vinyl tunes. Give the Sailor Moon Gimlet a try – a neon concoction made from Japanese gin, cherry blossom cordial, and Midori. Alternatively, savor premium sake in a wine glass, allowing your mood and taste to dictate your experience rather than being swayed by pretense.

This location offers a cozy 25-seater lounge and an outdoor terrace, complete with bring-your-own-vinyl sessions on Sundays and yakitori dishes coming soon. The atmosphere is beautifully captured by the team’s subtle motto: “Whispered words. Deep emotions.

If you’re looking for thoughtfully crafted cocktails, hard-to-find sakes, and a welcoming atmosphere, Bar Selecta is the perfect spot for you.
