Online critics are calling out popular social media personality Em Davies for a video she posted offering advice on how to celebrate Chinese New Year.
In a now-deleted video, the woman described customs related to the upcoming Year of the Horse as strange and unusual, jokingly calling them ‘woo woo crazy-girl’ behavior.
She shared a hopeful message in her post: ‘You always have the chance to start over, no matter what.’ She also included the hashtags ‘#yearofthesnake’ and ‘#yearofthehorse’.
Em received a lot of criticism on social media after posting a video that many people felt disrespected Chinese New Year, with some accusing her of treating it like a fleeting trend.
On Tuesday, a creator named Jordan Tan shared a video explaining their frustration with influencers posting content about ‘how to celebrate Chinese New Year’ and offering advice on the holiday.
She was really upset with how many influencers were talking about celebrating Chinese New Year, saying they seemed completely out of touch. She admitted she just couldn’t stand to watch it anymore.
I noticed they’ve been sharing advice about Chinese New Year traditions, like reminding people not to wash their hair beforehand.
‘It’s like… my culture is not your trend,’ she said.
Grace also shared a video criticizing influencers for turning Chinese New Year into just another fashion trend.
Oh my gosh, you guys, you won’t BELIEVE what happened! Em actually responded to the feedback video! It was the sweetest, most humble apology ever. They basically said it was so amazing and insightful, and they were SO sorry if their video bothered anyone – they even took it down right away because they never meant to cause any trouble. I’m seriously melting! It’s just… perfect.
Chinese New Year is a significant traditional holiday marking the lunar new year.
The holiday is marked by spending time with family, enjoying special meals, and participating in cultural traditions, often including the exchange of red envelopes and firework displays.
Every year is linked to an animal from the Chinese zodiac, which shapes celebrations and customs. This animal represents new beginnings, wealth, and luck.
