IndyCar: The bold '$1 million move' that's paying off in a big way

As a dedicated IndyCar fan with years of racing experience under my belt, I can confidently say that David Malukas’ arrival at Meyer Shank Racing has been nothing short of a game-changer! After a tough start to the season, the team was teetering on the brink of missing out on the coveted $1 million Leaders’ Circle payout. But with Malukas at the wheel, they’ve catapulted themselves into a relatively safe spot.

After a challenging beginning for rookie Tom Blomqvist during the 2024 IndyCar season, Meyer Shank Racing swiftly took action to boost their performance.

Previously let go from Arrow McLaren because of his absence in multiple races following a wrist injury sustained in a mountain biking mishap prior to the season, David Malukas has now joined the team to pilot the No. 66 Honda, starting with the June event at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: After numerous people warned Malukas that driving an open-wheel race car post-wrist injury wouldn’t feel the same, he proved them wrong with an outstanding two-year stint with Dale Coyne Racing and HMD Motorsports, seamlessly transitioning into his IndyCar career.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, this game-changing move has completely altered my chances of pocketing that juicy $1 million from the Leaders’ Circle payout with Meyer Shank Racing’s No. 66 team.

Blomqvist had a slow beginning in the 2024 season, and Helio Castroneves also struggled, leaving them with mediocre results. This was before Malukas joined, and their combined performances were putting the team at risk of not making it into the top 22 positions in the entrant standings among those eligible for Leaders’ Circle.

Malukas’ mid-season arrival has totally changed that.

In the last five races, he’s ensured a ranking no worse than 14th, maintaining an average starting spot of approximately 8.8. Lately, he achieved his best result this season by coming in sixth at the Toronto street race.

Unexpectedly, Team No. 66 finds itself in 19th position among the 25 teams vying for the $1 million Leader’s Circle prizes. They currently have 144 points, which is 28 points above the threshold required to be included in the top 22.

I’m ecstatic about the remarkable transformation in our team’s performance this season! With a whopping 82 points scored across five races, we’re now averaging a stellar 12 points per race – a significant leap from our initial 62 points and an average of 8.86. It’s truly amazing how the arrival of our new teammate, Malukas, has boosted our scoring!

As a passionate fan, I must admit there’s still plenty of ground to cover, but considering most teams within our league aren’t known for racking up points, the remarkable success of Malukas and his No. 66 team has undeniably secured us a relatively comfortable position in the future.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the 28-point lead, but what truly stands out is the presence of three teams between us and the cutoff. This means that we need consistent performances from various teams to disrupt the journey of Malukas and Meyer Shank Racing.

The 30th-ranked Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team currently holds a 19-point advantage over the standings’ bottom, while the No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing team and the No. 41 A.J. Foyt Enterprises team are just seven and five points above the qualifying line in positions 21st and 22nd respectively.

And it’s not just the prospect of this $1 million payout that is good news for Meyer Shank Racing.

Instead of moving to A.J. Foyt Enteprises next season, Malukas, along with full-time teammate Felix Rosenqvist, have proven that Meyer Shank Racing is indeed a competitive team and can compete at the front of the pack.

As a gamer, I’d say: Next year looks promising for top-tier racers like Alexander Rossi, as the team I’m on could become an enticing destination due to whispers of a potential technical partnership with the dominant and title-winning Chip Ganassi Racing. This could be a game-changer!

Get ready as Malukas prepares to shine at his top racetrack, World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, where he has achieved his best finishes yet with a second and third place in just two races. Tune in this coming Saturday, August 17th, starting at 6:00 p.m. ET on USA Network for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500!
