IndyCar has a new lead announcer for the 2025 season

As an ardent fan, one of the most intriguing mysteries swirling around the 2025 IndyCar season, marking its debut under the new multi-year pact with Fox Sports as the exclusive broadcaster for the series and the Indy 500, was who would grace the broadcast booth.

That question has now been answered.

As a dedicated racing enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! Townsend Bell and James Hinchcliffe, both of whom have previously served as driver analysts at NBC Sports, are now officially part of our team in those roles. Furthermore, after much anticipation fueled by recent rumors, the renowned British motorsport journalist and presenter, Will Buxton, known for his work in Formula 1, has indeed secured the position of our lead announcer. This lineup promises an unparalleled blend of expertise and enthusiasm for the sport we all love!

Fox grabs Bell, Hinchcliffe from NBC, names Buxton to lead role

As a diehard racing fan, I’m thrilled to share that come the new season, Buxton is poised to step into Diffey’s shoes. NBC made the strategic move of keeping Diffey as their primary announcer for the NASCAR Cup Series before the 2024 season concluded. Diffey, who took over from the late Bob Jenkins on the IndyCar side post-2012, filled Rick Allen’s role on the Cup Series side last August.

Starting from that juncture up to the final lap of the 2024 IndyCar season, I was fortunate enough to take my place alongside Bell and Hinchcliffe in the NBC Sports booth, a position I’d been preparing for since stepping in as a fill-in/reserve for Diffey back in 2015. It’s a dream come true!

Before transitioning to Fox, Bell served as an analyst for IndyCar in their broadcast booth since 2013. Hinchcliffe came on board in 2020 and returned in 2022 after another full season of competing in IndyCar in 2021, and has been part of the team since then.

2025’s entire 17-race IndyCar schedule will air on Fox, a significant change from Fox Sports 1. This shift was one of the key factors that influenced IndyCar’s decision to accept lower payments and move away from NBC Sports.

Starting this coming March 2nd, the 2025 season kicks off with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, streaming live straight from the city streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, airing as early as 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
