IndyCar: 'Food poisoning' scheme uncovered in hilarious championship twist

As a gamer with years of experience following various racing series, I’ve seen my fair share of unexpected twists and turns, but this 2024 IndyCar championship race is taking the cake! The nail-biting tension between Scott McLaughlin and Alex Palou has reached new heights, with Scott pulling out all the stops to give himself a chance at the title. From inviting Alex over for sushi (which I hope isn’t a ploy to poison him) to locking him in a port-a-potty before the race, it seems Scott is leaving no stone unturned!

In simpler terms, three racers have a mathematical chance to clinch the 2024 IndyCar title, yet one of them requires at least one of the remaining two drivers not to participate in the season-ending race at Nashville Superspeedway this weekend.

As a gamer, I find myself 50 points behind Alex Palou in our IndyCar season race. With every race offering a maximum of 54 points and each competitor guaranteed at least five, the math is clear: I need to score significantly more than him to have a shot at the title come Sunday afternoon. It’s crunch time, and it’s all or nothing from here on out!

The method implies that Chip Ganassi Racing’s two-time series champion will not participate in this Sunday’s 206-lap race held on the four-turn, 1.333-mile (2.145-kilometer) oval track located in Lebanon, Tennessee, opting out entirely.

Knowing this, it appears that McLaughlin is pulling out all the stops to try to give himself that chance.

It’s quite possible, surprisingly so: Overlooking a crucial season finale due to food poisoning isn’t uncommon in IndyCar racing. For instance, in 2013, E.J. Viso had to skip the final race at Auto Club Speedway after consuming contaminated oysters. Carlos Munoz stepped in for him during his absence. Notably, Viso, who was out of championship contention, never raced in the series again following this incident.

It seems that even during his days competing in the Australian Supercars Championship, McLaughlin was known for taking notes. However, Palou appears to be staying one step ahead and not getting caught up in this practice.

The food poisoning scheme is an escalation of an earlier joke McLaughlin made about locking Palou in a port-a-potty at the track before the race.

Some supporters question IndyCar’s decision to consider McLaughlin as a title candidate, taking into account the current controversy.

As a devoted enthusiast, I find myself in a unique position to acknowledge that Team Penske’s Will Power, a two-time series champion, is the only driver who theoretically could pose a challenge to Alex Palou if he competes. Currently, Palou holds a 33-point lead over me, the 27-year-old Spaniard.
