IndyCar announcement means top free agent won’t get a full-time ride

It is possible that neither Linus Lundqvist nor Rinus VeeKay, or possibly both of them, will be participating in the entire 2025 IndyCar season as a full-time competitor.

2024 Rookie of the Year contender Lundqvist has been on the hunt for a racing seat in the 2025 season since his departure from Chip Ganassi Racing, triggered by their reduction from five cars to three due to the introduction of the new charter system.

In simpler terms, following a five-season tenure, VeeKay, who last won a race for Ed Carpenter Racing in May 2021, was let go from the team, opening up a spot for Alexander Rossi, the winner of the 2016 Indy 500, to join.

Initially, two top-tier free agents were being eyed for open positions with Dale Coyne Racing in 2025. However, after Jacob Abel was confirmed to drive the No. 51 Honda full-time next year, only a single vacant seat remains within the team.

Dale Coyne’s team have yet to confirm a new driver for the No. 18 Honda.

In the year 2024, their racing team didn’t field full-time drivers for the first time since 2015. Instead, they shared their entries among various part-time drivers. Consequently, they couldn’t secure a podium finish, which was last achieved by them in 2015. Even more concerningly, they didn’t make a single top 12 finish, a feat not accomplished since Coyne himself drove for the team in 1987.

The team plans to provide another update within the next three weeks, and they hope to secure a permanent addition to their roster as they strive to regain their ability to achieve impressive results.

VeeKay previously raced for Dale Coyne’s team at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October, so he could still be a viable option. However, if VeeKay is indeed signed, it implies that Lundqvist will not continue with the team following his rookie season which saw him finish on the podium twice. Similarly, if Lundqvist signs with the team, it would mean that VeeKay’s tenure could come to an end.

It’s worth noting that Dale Coyne Racing might opt for a different driver altogether, given their potential preference for one with substantial funding for the second seat. Alternatively, they could find another driver more suitable than VeeKay or Lundqvist, considering the large pool of talented drivers waiting in the wings.

And of course, the team could end up signing multiple part-time drivers for that car after all.

In essence, it’s regrettable that neither Rinus VeeKay nor Marcus Lundqvist will be racing in the full-time 2025 IndyCar season, given their impressive performances since they ascended from the Road to Indy to the NTT IndyCar Series.

The upcoming 2025 IndyCar season kicks off on March 2nd, a Sunday. Fox will broadcast live from the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, starting at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time, right here on the streets of sunny St. Petersburg, Florida.
