IndyCar: Alexander Rossi's McLaren replacement confirmed for Toronto

As a passionate IndyCar fan, I am deeply disappointed to hear that Alexander Rossi will be unable to compete in this weekend’s Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto race due to his thumb injury sustained during practice. The No. 7 Chevrolet driver has had a rollercoaster season so far, and it’s unfortunate that yet another setback comes his way.

During the practice session for the IndyCar race at Exhibition Place in Toronto on Friday, Alexander Rossi from Arrow McLaren suffered an injury and fractured his thumb in a crash.

Due to this development, the regular driver of car No. 7 Chevrolet unfortunately cannot participate in this coming Sunday’s 85-race at the 11-turn, 1.786-mile (2.874-kilometer) Toronto street circuit in Ontario, Canada.

McLaren announced that Theo Pourchaire will take over from Rossi beginning with Saturday’s practice sessions and continue through the remainder of the weekend, replacing him in the No. 6 Chevrolet.

After a single practice run, he will participate in the qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.

Theo Pourchaire back at McLaren

When David Malukas got hurt and eventually let go by the team, Pourchaire took over as the driver of the No. 6 car for the rest of the season according to reports.

Last year’s Formula 2 champion, who was expected to race in 12 events to finish the season, only made it to five starts before being replaced by Nolan Siegel.

Over the past five races, the 20-year-old French driver achieved his best finish of 10th position on the Detroit streets in Michigan. This is currently the highest placement attained by any driver operating that car in this season. His last race took place at Road America in late May.

Based on my extensive knowledge and experience following the world of IndyCar racing, I can tell you that next season will bring some significant changes to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. While Rossi is currently a part of their team, he’s expected to be replaced by Christian Lundgaard. This news comes after McLaren ended their partnership with David Malukas following his injury, which kept him out of action for four races.

There are nearly four weeks between this Sunday’s race in Toronto and the next race on the calendar, which is scheduled to take place at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Saturday, August 17.

At the current ranking, Rossi holds the eighth position in the championship. His best result so far was a third-place finish at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca which took place towards the end of last month.

It has been more than 16 years since any driver of the No. 7 car won an IndyCar race.

On Sundays, starting at 1:00 p.m. ET, the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto race in Peacock will be broadcast live. For fans to watch this event live, they must have a paid subscription to either Peacock’s Premium or Premium Plus plans. This is the initial exclusive IndyCar race on Peacock’s 17-race schedule for 2024, with the second one being the Milwaukee Mile race in late August.
