As an ardent IndyCar enthusiast who’s been following the sport for over two decades, I can hardly contain my excitement as we gear up for the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway! It’s been 14 long years since we last saw an oval race in the series, and I must admit, it feels a bit like reuniting with an old friend.
In the transition from 2023 to 2024, it wasn’t initially planned for IndyCar to race at Nashville Superspeedway anytime soon. However, due to construction on a new stadium for the Tennessee Titans in downtown Nashville, the proposed street race in Music City had to be moved to another location instead.
Originally, we intended to adopt a fresh design starting from 2024. However, due to the building work and future arrangements at the AFC South stadium, it proved impractical to proceed with this plan.
Finally, after a decade’s gap, I’m thrilled to be part of the action as IndyCar returns to the 1.333-mile (2.145-kilometer) four-turn oval in Lebanon, Tennessee. And get this, it’s been ten years since an oval race has closed a season! Can’t wait to see the thrill unfold!
Three racers participating in this weekend’s 206-lap race have previously raced at the track over fifteen years ago: Scott Dixon, Will Power, and Graham Rahal. Notably, Dixon – who has held the title of three-time consecutive winner at Nashville – remains with the Chip Ganassi Racing team that he won with from 2006 to 2008.
Despite its resemblance to Texas Motor Speedway and being an oval race, the event will utilize the short track aero package. It’s worth noting that this race, known as the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, has been named thusly for reasons unrelated to its shape on the circuit.
For this upcoming race on Sunday, the classic method of determining the starting order using separate single-car qualifying sessions will be employed. Each driver’s average speed over a span of two laps will decide their placement as they prepare for the start of the race under the green flag.
