As a huge IndyCar fan, I am thrilled that Iowa Speedway is back on the calendar for two doubleheader races this weekend. The excitement surrounding these events is palpable, especially since the previous races have been action-packed and full of surprises.
This weekend at Iowa Speedway, the first of two consecutive races on the 2024 IndyCar calendar is set to unfold. On Saturday evening, spectators can look forward to the Hy-Vee Homefront 250, while on Sunday afternoon, the Hy-Vee One Step 250 will take place.
In 2022, the Newton, Iowa oval, which is a 0.875-mile (1.408-kilometer) track with four turns, made its comeback on the IndyCar calendar after being absent in 2021. Due to numerous cancellations caused by COVID-19 restrictions in previous years, including 2020, it held a doubleheader event for two consecutive seasons.
At IndyCar events featuring doubleheader races, the qualifying process employs a distinctive format different from that of ordinary oval races, excluding the Indianapolis 500. In this setup, each driver undertakes two laps for their qualifying attempt, and the resulting average speed from these two laps establishes their starting position in the race grid.
In the case of doubleheader events, the order of starting positions for the initial race is established based on a driver’s fastest lap time during the qualifying session. Similarly, for the second race, a driver’s second-fastest lap time from the same qualifying determines their starting position.
