IndyCar: 2024 Gateway qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a long-time IndyCar enthusiast with countless weekends spent glued to my TV screen or at the racetrack, I can hardly contain my excitement for this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 504 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway! The traditional oval qualifying format adds an extra layer of anticipation to the already electrifying atmosphere that surrounds these races.

As a long-time IndyCar enthusiast and someone who has attended numerous races over the years, I can confidently say that this weekend’s event at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway is particularly exciting for me. So far in the 2024 season, IndyCar has only run three oval races, but this weekend marks the first time we will see the traditional oval qualifying format. This is significant because I have always found oval races to be some of the most thrilling and unpredictable events on the IndyCar calendar. The tight competition, close racing, and high-speed action are unlike anything else in motorsports, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds this weekend. As a fan, I always appreciate when the series mixes things up and tries new things, and this change in qualifying format is sure to make for an even more exciting race. Bring on the ovals!

At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indy 500 adopts a distinctive qualifying system. Instead of one single qualifying attempt, drivers get multiple four-lap trials to determine their starting positions among the 33-car field. Furthermore, the qualifying process has its dedicated weekend instead of being squeezed into an hour-long session on the day preceding the race.

At Iowa Speedway, they follow a conventional two-race format, with each race using unique starting lineups. The speed of a driver’s first lap sets the starting order for the initial race, while their second lap speed establishes the starting order for the subsequent race.

As a longtime motorsports enthusiast and someone who has attended numerous races at various tracks across the country, I am excited about this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Madison International Speedway in Illinois. The four-turn, 1.25-mile oval is one of my favorite tracks due to its challenging layout and intense competition.

On Saturday evening, the racing order would be decided based on the final positions from the current standings (from worst to best).
