Indy 500: Way-too-early look at the 2025 entry list (32 cars already)

As a longtime enthusiast of IndyCar racing, I can hardly contain my excitement as the 109th Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway draws ever closer! With the 2025 season just around the corner and the grid filling up, it seems we’re in for another thrilling chapter in this storied race.

As Thanksgiving draws near, we’re also getting close to the midpoint between the 108th and 109th editions of the Indy 500 race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

On Sunday, May 25th, 2025, the 109th edition of “The Greatest Racing Event” is set to unfold at the Speedway in Indiana, a four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) racetrack. It seems that all 33 racing cars will be participating yet again.

For the 2025 IndyCar season, which consists of 17 races, a total of 27 cars will be competing full-time. These include the 25 teams that have charters under IndyCar’s new system. Notably, Prema Racing, the latest addition to the grid, plans to field two cars not covered by the charter system.

Beyond the 27 vehicles currently queued, an additional five cars are preparing to take part in Indy 500 qualifying trials. Under the revised system, no driver has guaranteed entry into the Indy 500. If two or more cars join the field between now and May, Bump Day will likely reoccur for the third year running, ensuring that no one can rest easy.

Let’s have a look at the 25 charter entries (plus Prema’s two cars).

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel the excitement for the upcoming Indy 500, with 32 confirmed entries already lined up. However, it’s a bit disheartening to see so many empty seats – especially since five out of the 25 chartered spots are still driverless.

Regarding the Indy 500 participants, there’s a strong possibility that Marco Andretti will join Andretti Autosport again next time. If not Marco, it’s certain that Andretti Autosport will field four cars for the race instead.

It’s quite evident that there’s a possibility for at least 33 vehicles here, considering Dreyer & Reinbold Racing/Cusick Motorsports and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing have consistently fielded multiple entries over the past three years, with the former potentially adding the No. 24 Chevrolet again, and the latter running four cars in consecutive years for this race.

Starting from March 2, 2025, the IndyCar season will kick off in the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The historic Indy 500, which is the sixth event in a total of seventeen races, will also take place that year. All these races will be broadcast live on Fox.
